Do we take Genesis literally?

For example Genesis 3:1-4

Now the serpent was more subtile than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

Eve ate and she did not die. Taking everything at face value the serpent told the truth, God lied.

Does this indicate to us that we are not to take Genesis literally?

Please forgive these somewhat ignorant questions

Actually Hilary she did die. Spiritually. From the moment that “Eve” (woman) disobeyed and encouraged her husband "“Ha Adam” (Man from the soil) to also disobey they both died to the life that God had prepared for them and all their generations.
Even died and Adam died, and we all die and as human beings we all now die and further as human beings we have an invisible barrier which prevents us from seeing God as it was possible before sin.
God in His Mercy did not destroy the “sin” touched creation, but from the very beginning promised a way would be availble to return to Him. Howev er, it is a different way then the original. Now it is by way of Jesus Christ, a magnificent way, which leads to God but a way also which must incorporate the action of death.
Death is now door way through which we all must pass through before we come before God.
I often think that maybe it is through “death” or ecstacy that we can pass through the gates being protected by the angel wielding the flaming swords. We cannot enter into the “Garden of paradise” without passing through the gates and the angels wielding swords.
The lie that satan (serpent) told is that there would be no death “you shall surely not die” I am reminded of all the religions that believe in re incarnation…you shall not die.
Anyways thats another story.
