(John 14:24) “Those who do not love me do not keep my words.”

(Luke 6:46) “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord’, and not do what I say?”

(John 12:47-48) “If anyone hears my words and does not keep them faithfully, it is not I who shall condemn Him, since I have come not to condemn the world, but to save the world: he who rejects Me and refuses My words has his judge already, the word itself that I have spoken will be his judge on the last day.”

(Matthew 7:21) “It is not those who say to me, ‘Lord, Lord’, who will enter the kingdom of Heaven, but the person who does the will of my Father in Heaven. When the day comes many will say to me, “Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, cast out demons in your name, work many miracles in your name?’ Then I shall tell them to their faces; I have never known you; away from me, you evil men!”

If we want to love Jesus and be one of His followers, how can we read scripture and literally not live it? (Luke 12:33) “Sell your possessions and give alms. Get yourselves purses that do not wear out, treasure that will not fail you, in Heaven where no thief can reach it and no moth destroy it. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” (Luke 14:33) “So in the same way, none of you can be my disciple unless he gives up all his possessions.” (Matthew 6:19) “Do not store up treasures for yourselves on earth, where moths and woodworms destroy them and thieves can break in and steal.”

(Matthew 5:43-44) “You have learnt how it was said, you must love your neighbor and hate your enemy, but I say this to you: love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” (Romans 12:18-21) “Do all you can to live at peace with everyone. Never try to get revenge; leave that, my friends, to God’s anger. As scripture says: ‘vengeance is Mine I will pay them back, the Lord promises,’ but there is more: if your enemy is hungry, you should give him food, and if he is thirsty, let him drink. Thus you heap red-hot coals on his head. Resist evil and conquer it with good.” Who are you willing to trust your soul to, other then Jesus?

Preach the gospel daily, use words when necessary.
Peace,

Giver, what a challenge to all Christians and all Churches!!! I personally am not willing to take the chance of following any church teachings unless they follow scripture as it is written. I just responded to a post to my thread about not being Catholic. I indirectly referred to some of the scriptures that you referred to, but I didn’t take the time to look them up like you did. I truly believe that what is written in Scripture is the way we should strive to be. I’m glad that I am not alone. Thanks for being on the forum:)

So, do you see Catholics as not following the gospel?

Also, until I know more of what purpose the OP is quoting verses to us, I can not comment on whether I agree with him. You are probably aware that there are people who quote bible verses in such a way that it confuses the truth that was meant by those verses. For example, occasionally I will hear on the news reports about incestous fathers who use the story of Lot and his daughters to excuse their evil activities. This is horrible but it does happen.

That is why I can’t agree or disagree with the OP until he expounds upon his interpretation of the verses.

I believe that some Catholics follow the Word of the Gospel and I think that some Catholics follow only the teachings of the Church.
I believe there really is a difference. To be Spiritual is one thing to be religious is another! I challenge spiritual Catholics to respond to Giver!!!

The teachings of the Catholic Church are all entirely scriptural, and the scripture is entirely a tradition of the Catholic Church…you can’t have one without the other…both are directly from Christ Himself

No one follows scripture, that’s what makes us sinners! It’s still a bad thing, of course. I don’t know of any Catholics who follow only the teachings of the Catholic Church, especially since the teachings are much intertwined with and come from scripture.

Yes, we want to love Jesus by following His Word, there is not much of a choice!

However, a hypocrite who preaches right and does wrong makes not his words untrue.

The Gospel from just a couple weeks ago, Matt. 23 : 1-12

"Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples, saying,
“The scribes and the Pharisees
have taken their seat on the chair of Moses.
Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you,
but do not follow their example.

For they preach but they do not practice.
They tie up heavy burdens hard to carry
and lay them on people’s shoulders,
but they will not lift a finger to move them.
All their works are performed to be seen.”

We will meet hypocrites all throughout our life, and even be one many times. Let us not exalt ourselves for our faith, but humble ourselves (which is, of course, easier said than done)

You need to be more specific. What exactly is your definition of spiritual and religious? Give some examples, please.

Normally I hear people use the excuse that they are spiritual and not religious to justify a dislike for any rules. I don’t think that is your intent.

Another question, in what way have you observed Catholics following the church and not the Gospel?

Just as an aside, what is the point of this thread? I am not entirely certain what we are debating. Is it that Catholics don’t follow the gospel? It would be nice if the OP would respond to the thread that he started.

Peacekeeper should also made aware that he/she would have no scriptures to quote from without the Catholic Church which is the Deposit of Faith and which decided which scriptures should be compiled into what is called the Bible.

WHEREAS this thread was opened with several scriptures, which would imply the Sacred Scripture forum;

WHEREAS this thread was opened with a question pertaining to a moral dilemma, which would imply the Moral Theology forum;

WHEREAS responses have referenced the origins of the Bible being the Catholic Church, which would imply the Apologetics forum;

WHEREAS posters have questioned the direction the original poster wished to direct this thread;

WHEREAS Giver has not come back to clarify the intention of this thread;

Now, THEREFORE,

Catherine Grant, Spirituality Moderator,

proclaims this “Do we want to love Jesus by following His Word?” thread** CLOSED**.
