I go out dancing often. The dances are very nice and decent, but at this one place I go to, they do one dance which is also decent, but is danced to a song with obscene lyrics. I usually sit this dance out and I think they wonder why, though I don’t explain it to them. Is this necessary?

Necessary? I don’t know. What I do know is it is an awesome way of preaching the Gospel without using words. Then when someone asks you why you sit that song out each time, you can tell them that you do it because it’s immoral. What an awesome witness!

I think that it is a good practice of chastity.

A good practice of courage would be to tell them why.

There are so many more important things going on in the world at this moment, and your worried about obscene song lyrics? Be thankful you weren’t recently forcibly removed from your home, or blown to bits by a car bomb

How do you know the OP is not thankful for that as well as being concerned with song lyrics? The OP may even be very active in social justice and other things… one does not exclude the other.

Losing ones soul do to unchastity is much worse than both of those.

I don’t think you owe anybody an explanation, but if they ask, then why not tell them? It’s up to you, or you can coyly say, “I have my reasons” or tell your friend, “are you offering to buy me a Pepsi refill?”

You may want to tell them but you don’t owe anybody any explanation why you sit out particular songs. A gentleman must not pry into the reasons of a lady. Other ladies do, but they will behind your back if not to your face, so that’s irrelevant and I am not qualified to advise on that part.

Rock on! Sitting out the dance shows great courage! A simple explanation is great, and sometimes it might even get people thinking about their own music. Over the past few years I’ve slowly deleted/destroyed music and CD’s that I listened to because of the lyrics. It’s easy to get caught up in thinking that the beat is good, but that doesn’t make the lyrics any better if they are obscene!

Honestly, it’s also more attractive not to have a profane mouth and ears; I did a 180 from my freshman year of college, and many good things have come from being “clean”…except on occasion during a heated basketball game…I’m working on that :o ).
