For an instant, the priest actually becomes the 2nd Person of the Trinity?
That is what he said! Sounds like the priest is also Jesus Himself as he forgives sins for he acts as"Jesus Himself" as well as on Christ’s behalf and through Christ and the RCC.

This is new information for me.

I suspect some awkward wording.

I suspect some awkward wording.
Maybe, I did a bit of reading on the subject this afternoon and honestly I can’t decipher just what the position really is.

I Timothy 2 :5 in the Douay Rheims version states that there is only one mediator between God and man and that is Christ Jesus.

Do YOU believe that only God can forgive sins?
WHY?

GBY

Patrick
Of course I believe Jesus mentioned this saying the Son of Man on earth has power to forgive sins… We also know

Luke 23:34 Then said Jesus, ***Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.

and

Mark 11:25 And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.

11:26 But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.

I believe God through Jesus can forgive sins…

Yes. But the concept of persona Christi holds that, by virtue of the priest’s ordination and apostolic succession, considering the relevant portions of Matthew, the priest acts in the person of Christ, not in the identity. He is a representative, an image, given the authority of what he represents, not transubstantiated (to misuse a concept) into the 2nd person of the Trinity. “Partakers of the function of Christ the sole Mediator…,” as it is said in* Lumen Gentium.*

Or perhaps there is another way to look at it. Always willing to learn.Learning things is good.

Full Question
Is the priest “another Christ” when he says Holy Mass, hears confessions, etc.?
Answer
The Church teaches that the priest ministers in persona Christi, in the person of Christ. In speaking to his disciples, Jesus said, “He who hears you hears me, and he who rejects you rejects me” (Lk 10:16). “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained” (Jn 20:22–23).

cfpeople.org/SeminarianWritings/Sem033.html

Thus, Christ bestows the effects of his priesthood and his priestly action on the Church by allowing other men to participate in his one priesthood. Just as Christ redeemed us by a priestly act of worship, so the ordained priest, by virtue of his participation in Christ’s priesthood, offers that same sacrificial act of worship on the altar. “The sacrifice which is offered every day in the Church is not distinct from that which Christ Himself offered, but is a commemoration thereof.” The priest, who is a sharer in the priesthood of Christ, offers the Mass in the Person of Christ. I like that much better.

when someone offends another person and is forgiven for that offense by the one offended, it means that the offended person no longer holds the offense against the one who offended them. the one offended will enact no retribution of any kind against the offender.

since sins are offenses against God, God is the only One who can forgive them and forego taking retribution against the sinner.

happily for us sinners, Jesus made His power to forgive offenses against Him available to us through the apostles. since Jesus also gave His power to bind and loosen to the apostles, they were able to further distribute the Lord’s power to forgive sins to whomever they chose.

Tank you, but it seems to ME [the OP] that you omit “Only” in your reply
