I was wondering when I am confirmed a Catholic if we have to choose a confirmation name. And if so how do you choose. God Bless.

I am choosing to choose a name for Confirmation.

I am choosing Philomena from St. Philomena who is my Patroness.

You can, but don’t have to. When I went through RCIA, the director of the program didn’t let our group know we could, so no one recieved one. (She was rather, ummm “progressive” )

At least my sister gets to chose a name!

I read through books and books of saints…
I looked up patron saints for things that I enjoyed…

I choose Teresa, but I don’t really remember why…
And I was pretty sure that it wasn’t for Saint Teresa of Avila…
but I don’t remember reading about the other Teresa’s either…

I think that it doesn’t matter in the long run, as the Holy Spirit will work through you to help you find a Saint that fits somehow… 😉

(This does make me glad I never got a tattoo though! 😛 )

Don’t stress about it.

I had the same question too as i was unsure of what to do etc

My saint is St Katharine of Alexandria as she is the patron saint of nurses - something i am currently studying.

I do admit though that since my trip to Fatima - something has awoken inside me and makes my heart very fond of that place - is there a saint of Fatima or just Our Lady?

There is one Saint and two blesseds with Fatima. St. Lúcia dos Santos eventually became a Carmalite nun. Her two cousins Blessed Francisco and Jacinta Marto, died in the 1919 Spanish Flu Epidemic.

I chose St Dymphna for my confirmation name. I have struggle with mental and emotional illnesses for most of my life, and she is the patroness for those with mental illnesses (among other things).

God Bless!

When my husband converted, he chose the name Andrew as it is a saint’s name, and also our son’s name! 🙂

As others have said…you can, but it isn’t required. I chose Stephen as my confirmation name.

Does anyone know if it OK to choose “two” confirmation names??? I am struggling with two saints that I am really ‘in Love’ with.

Good posts – I happen to love Saint Athanasius. BUT, having grown up with a rather uncommon first name (darla) I chose St. Elizabeth Ann Seton – I love her too and Elizabeth does go better for me as a confirmation name than Athanasius (but I’ll always love and admire him – but then again, I wouldn’t name a son for him either) hahaha:D

Choose whatever you want.

Please realize, though, that what you choose has nothing to do with the Sacrament and celebration.

I had the same problem. Our RCIA director said I could hyphenate the two names–problem solved!

Thank you everyone for your answers 🙂
I know that one’s Patron Saint choice doesn’t have anything to do with the Scarament of Confirmation directly, but since God sends us Aid from above it is necessary to ‘relate to’ the saint we choose to some degree.

I have made a decision;

I originally chose St Gemma Galgani…she is such a perfect example of Purity, Obedience, Love, Sacrifice, and Strength! (a bar too high for me!) She is just so perfect is scared me off!

Then I discovered St Birgitta of Sweden and she has 15 Amazing prayers about the Passion of Jesus that have divine Promises attached to in order to help save one’s family if you say them faithfully for a year. The prayers are wonderful and meditate on the the wounds of Jesus!

I decided that I will say the Prayers of St Birgitta and make my original saint, St Gemma, my Patroness. I need all the help I can get!! 😃 As it turns out, something very neat, St Gemma’s Feast Day is on April 11th! … She died on Holy Saturday and in 1903 it happened to fall on April 11th!! … the same day we will share the Precious Body and Blood for the first time!

Congratulations to all of you who are just coming into the Church! I feel like I have just begun to live… and I have!!👍

It was not mentioned in our RCIA program, until I brought the issue up. I was told that “people don’t really do that anymore,” but I pressed the issue until one of the instructors finally admitted that I could take a confirmation name if I wanted one. And I did. I think I’m the only one of the seven of us in the class who is doing this, though.

I chose Raphael, for the Archangel Raphael. I’ve been fascinated with the Book of Tobit ever since I read it a few years back! But it was hard to pin down just ONE name with so many inspirational saints out there!

I wish RCIA programs would encourage the practice of confirmation names. I think it helps us grow closer to the Saints–not only the ones we have chosen for our patrons, but all those that we look at while we are choosing!

Oh yes! I couldn’t agree with you more! So much heavenly Inspiration to be had with all the saints!

Long story short, through out my birth-Presbyterian life I still studied the lives of the saints (almost secretly since my father who raised us was strict Protestant). In fact I attended Catholic Masses for seven years off and on, and did weekly Eurcharistic Adoration for four years. … Now finally coming into the Church!

I heard they don’t generally ‘bother’ with Patron Saints anymore and I think it is not what God wants; I believe that is just another way the Church has become ‘luke warm’ because of the Dark influences in the world. Mass itself, the Holy Bible, the Vatican, celebrate the Saints Lives! Something that has really hit me hard lately I heard a priest talk about is the fact that many don’t speak up for the ways of the Catholic Church and our silence causes those against it to get away with much.

For me, Patron Saint (and a Guardina Angel) is a Divine Warrior that God provides to stand beside us and help us through this world. The saint’s lives only mean anything if we trust they are true, and my experience tells me that no doubt about it, Heaven’s Guardians take care of us!!

I look into the eyes of St Gemma Galgini, the Saint who I believe was chosen for me (not the other way round) I see this magnificent person staring back at me. She is very much alive in Heaven and just waiting to (name removed by moderator)ire my heart toward our Lord Jesus!! The lives of the Saints are there just waiting to help us realize, that each one of them were ‘sinners that never gave up’! How wonderful that is! … and How Thankful I am to God!!! :extrahappy:

I am planning on choosing one; however, I need to pray about it tonight, as there are two saints I feel connected to (one being St Cecilia, the other being St Catherine of Alexandria).

I chose St. Mary Magdalene because even when I was a Protestant I loved her!

Mine is St. Elizabeth of Hungary, a patron saint of brides and a wonderful model of charity.

I had several saints in mind, and ended up choosing St. Francis of Assisi. Or rather, I will choose him, tonight. 🙂
