The longer I live the more I realize I view the world differently. Let’s say you are planning to do something. What doesn’t matter much but like nearly everything we do it could work out or could fail with shades in between.

Do you consider the bad outcomes them precede or do you focus almost exclusively on positive outcomes to the near exclusion of bad ones?

Failing to plan is planning to fail.

I’m a Realist, the glass is half empty and needs refilled. Things seldom go according to plan and you should always have alternate options.

Doesn’t it get tiring to always expect the worst though? I would rather do as much planning as I can and have a plan b if needed. Then, if the first thing fails, there is still no need to worry. It is just a shift to plan b.

Oddly no, because it means I have contingency plans to I knows I can fall back on or simple acceptance of the risk. There is no meaningful distress or despair.

Well if you have a contingency plan, I would say you already considered possible bad outcomes. I think there is a difference in expecting the worst, and preparing for the worst.

One of my college professors, when handing back graded tests, would exclaim “Always expect the very worst, and you’ll never be disappointed.”

On considering bad outcomes… A week before a 3 hour Engineering Final Exam, the prof handed out study questions. It had 7 very difficult questions. One per page. At the top was the comment, “the final will be similar to 4 of these questions”. On the day of the exam, the TA’s handed out the same stapled pages.at the top, the words “will be similar to” were crossed out, and replaced with “DO”.

(Parenthetically, only one person in the class got a perfect score).

Moral: always consider outcomes.
