I know this is probably a strange question, but I was wondering if women ever get their mantilla veils blessed. Has there ever been a practice to do so? Just curious.

Thanks!

Mantillas are a relatively new headcovering in the history of the Church. Outside of the Spanish culture, no one really wore them until Jackie Kennedy started a fashion trend by wearing a black one with her black dress in the 1960’s. Unless there was a cultural or ethnic custom for women to have their hats, scarves, or bonnets blessed, I doubt there was ever a practice to have any other form of laywomen’s headcoverings blessed in the Roman rite, especially since it’s not a sacramental.

I have asked my brother (Fr. Eric Filmer, of the Ask an Apologist Forum) for his (name removed by moderator)ut here.

I have inquired of him in the past about blessings. He has told me that there are “official” blessings (whose form is prescribed in a Book of Blessings), but a priest may also offer an extemporaneous blessing (ie, “off the cuff”) for any appropriate intent.

So, as I understand it, a priest may offer a blessing for an article of dress intended for pious devotion, regardless of whether there is an “official” blessing of this nature.

But I present here only my own impression of what my brother has told me. I think I got it right, but I defer to my brother for a more “official” answer, and I have asked him for his (name removed by moderator)ut.

The simple answer is YES.
Some people have a lot of things blessed.

In fact, some people invite their Priest once a year, to come out and Bless their house (and all of the things inside of it).
This is a very old Ritual, which is still practiced, and is a beautiful thing.
