You can find all kinds of books about lectio divina (sacred reading), but begin with Mark’s gospel. Read it all the way through in one sitting. then go back to the beginning, read it slowly one chapter at a time, or even one section.
Annie, I’ve noticed from other posts that you seem to find great inspiration in Mark’s Gospel. Is it your favorite? I’m not picking on you, but am interested in learning if your prefer it and why.

Does any one have a favorite gospel, and if so why does is stir you mroe than the others?

My favorite has to be John. I like the way he presents everything and episodes he uses:

Jesus performs a sign (or miracle) then there is a discourse identifying the significance of the sign.

eg: Mulitplication of Loaves and Fish then Eat my Flesh, Drink my Blood
. . . Come to the table of plenty

Also he makes it very clear that Jesus is God (Prolog, I AM discourse, Lamb of God, Crucifixion on Passover)

My favorite is Mark. It is short and sweet. You can read it easily in one sitting. You can easily read it multiple times. Each time that you read it you can focus on a different perspective (Jesus, the apostles, the pharasees, the people).

I don’t think I have a favorite yet. I am still trying to learn more about them. I have read them all quite a few times, but it seems that I still have issues remembering the differences in the synoptic gospels, as they are similar (well, to me at least). My “favorite,” depends on what nourishment I seek at the time of reading. From John, I like the details he gives, like the image of Jesus tracing his finger in the sand, while thinking of a reply.

I find John’s Gospel the most thought-provoking gospel, since much of our ideas about Christ’s divinity and the Real Presence, central themes in the Christian faith, are based on it. I however do like the other three Gospels as well.

my favorite is John’s gospel from the [original 1966] Jerusalem bible. If I had nothing else to read and meditate with for the rest of my life that would do it. I always suggest Mark’s gospel to teens, to newbies in RCIA or adult confirmation class, or to those who need “initial evangelization”, their first real taste of the gospel message because it is the shortest, it can be read at one sitting, its language is simple, direct, forceful, concise, journalistic. (I am also a Hemingway fan and he is the Hemingway of evangelists).

John. Reason? His is the gospel that focuses on Christ’s divinity and the real presence. Also I really appreciate the prose itself for style and image.

Blessings

For me, it’s John…for all the reasons mentioned above, and above all it contains Our Lord’s Priestly Prayer, which gives me goosebumps (and inspires me) everytime I read it.

My favorite is the Gospel of Matthew since it was the Gospel reading (21: 28-32) at the first Mass I ever attended (remembered). It seemed appropriate.

Also, I took Matthew as my confirmation name.
