Who are the Desert Fathers?
Abba Isaac
St John Cassian
St Anthony of Egypt

These are just a few of them, who were the mystics going back to the 3rd and 4th Centuries who passed on the practice of contemplative prayer to us.

Thank you!

Those who pray ALL seven of the Hours each day work their way through all 150 Psalms over a four week period.
Actually not quite. If you pray the Office of Readings, Morning Prayer, Mid-day Prayer, Evening Prayer and Compline (that’s 5 of the canonical hours) you will go through the entire psalter over a 4-week period; also for Compline you may substitute psalms 4, 90 and 133 every day and still go through the entire psalter in 4 weeks because the psalms they substituted are repeated elsewhere.

If you use the Complementary Psalter for the remaining two hours, you will be repeating psalms already recited elsewhere.

One more quibble, you won’t be praying 150 psalms but 147 as three cursing psalms were not included in the LOTH. Also, as in most 4 week periods there’s bound to be a feast with psalms from the festive psalter, it happens pretty often that in those 4 weeks we don’t actually pray all 147 psalms.

But otherwise the LOTH is great!

I also include the Angelus after the Office of Readings, Mid-day prayer and Compline.

What is the Compline?
Night Prayer.

The Trappist Monastery where I go on retreat, it’s the final prayer of the day.

The chapel is dark as the psalms are sung and they ring the bell three times to end it. As the monks and guests walk out, the Abbot blesses each one with Holy Water…
