If you commit a **mortal **sin and don’t go to confession, will you go to Hell?

Um, as far as I know, that would be true in cases where you were unrepentant of the sin. Like if you committed a mortal sin knowing it was a mortal sin in the first place and said, “I don’t care, I’m doing it anyway” and then didn’t go to confession I would say yes. If you committed the sin and then were repentant and decided to go to confession at your next opportunity, then I would say no, you wouldn’t. Or if during your last few moments you repented, you wouldn’t. Pretty much that’s what I know…someone correct me if I’m wrong, though. 🙂

Normally yes, one dying with mortal sin goes to Hell. However, while confession is the normal means to achieve forgiveness, it is not absolute. That is, if someone mortally sins and has perfect contrition, it could be forgiven outside the sacrament. BUT perfect contrition is difficult to achieve, that is why the sacrament is so important–imperfect contrition in the sacrament is sufficient for forgiveness.

Perfect contrition is when you’re sorry for your sins only out of love for God, rather than the punishment that results from it.

perhaps someone can help me understand this. i’ve wondered about it for awhile.

perfect contrition. being genuinely sorry for your sins, without being upset about the punishment. in other words, being sorry for your sins for the right reason - because they offend God, and you want your relationship with Him to be intact.

i THINK that i have perfect contrition after i sin almost every time. i’m never really worried about punishment - i’m wanting to reinstate the relationship i have with God - i’m sorry for offending Him.

can someone explain perfect contrition a little more, so i can know the difference between it and what i am experiencing?

It’s not enough to not only be sorry because you are offending God…you must also be totally repentant of the sin. In other words…free from all attachment to the sin. This is extreamly difficult to do.

We must all go to confession if we truly want confirmation that are sins are forgiven…this is the way Jesus wants us to do it!
