to be saved, in the view of the sola fide enthusiasts?

Can you be saved if you just believe without making any dedication?

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9

So, it is not by our actions that we are saved, the scripture is clear. However, the whole idea of sola fide can be deceptive.

“What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well,” but you do not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it? So also faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead. Indeed someone might say, “You have faith and I have works.” Demonstrate your faith to me without works, and I will demonstrate my faith to you from my works.”
James 2:14-18

The crux of the matter is that if a person is faithful to the Lord, good works go hand in hand with this faith. You cannot separate one from the other. The idea of sola fide is that faith comes first, then good works, not the other way around.

Andrew

Prayer as God’s gift [2559](javascript:openWindow(‘cr/2559.htm’)😉 "Prayer is the raising of one’s mind and heart to God or the requesting of good things from God."2 But when we pray, do we speak from the height of our pride and will, or “out of the depths” of a humble and contrite heart?3 He who humbles himself will be exalted;4 *humility *is the foundation of prayer, Only when we humbly acknowledge that "we do not know how to pray as we ought,"5 are we ready to receive freely the gift of prayer. "Man is a beggar before God."6

Yes, I believe you do have to pray…
Its the only way of talking with God.!!

God Bless

Well, you know from the Baptist church I came from, one had to make a “public profession of faith” so once again, they weren’t as literal as they think they are.😉

As a side comment:

A local MARRIED, Baptist preacher has been indicted for molesting boys. When asked about his faith and what he was supposed to be he gave this wonderful answer, " I am a simple country preacher. I preach like it has been done for the last 180 – no, I didn’t miss a zero – years."

I am not humble to say this, but when I am reading the Early Fathers or one of the great prayers that are part of our wonderful Tradition, I can’t help thinking about how we used to sing about “That old time religion” I have a very different definition for that phrase. 👍

You don’t have to pray, you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do.

However, if you want to grow in the love of Christ, and develop a stronger relationship with your creator, you would pray. If you truly love Jesus, you would spend time with him, thinking of him, talking to him in prayer, loving him.

Would the person you love, believe you loved them if you never told them, or did anything that showed your love?

How can you love Our Lord, if you never show any signs that you do?
Actions speak louder than words, be careful of lipservice.

You spend time with the people you love, your friends, family, spouse or that extra special person. You also have conversations with these people, seek advice or just talk and laugh with them.

So why would Jesus be any different? You love Him, why not talk to Him, bring Him your concerns, seek advice, or just laugh with Him. He has an amazing sense of humor!

Can you live, if you don’t breathe ? 🙂

Peace be with you all,

Remember the very broad definition of “prayer” with the Catholic Church, friend.

Peace, Love and Blessings,

“Faith without works is dead.” People who really love feel a need to express that love to the beloved by word and deed.

Your question is not relative to humans. People who have no deed in service to God have no faith.

We gain heaven by faith and works.

Exactly, which is why faith alone is not enough. Our actions (works) matter.

Yes your right. 🙂
I was told a little story from my mother when I was small. It goes something like this.
When were standing between the gates of heaven and hell and want to enter heaven God will ask us “who are you”?
  • at this point you will give Him your name - If you didn’t pray( talk) to Him in this world He might say to you in the next,
“You never talked (Prayed) to me I don’t know you, sorry you can’t enter.”
May sound at little harsh but how can you get to know someone without talking to them.-

Everything starts from prayer. Without asking God for love, we cannot possess love and still less are we able to give it to others. Just as people today are speaking so much about the poor but they do not know or talk to the poor, we too cannot talk so much about prayer and yet not know how to pray. - Mother Teresa - :yup:
