Do you let your kids watch anime shows?

I’ve noticed this board seems to have a certain wariness toward fantasy-based stuff like books, movies, and even cartoons. As a result, I’ve been reluctant to ask how you people feel about Japanese animation. Personally, I think it’s a great way to open your mind to another culture and I enjoy it immensely, even better than most American “entertainment”. It’s thought-provoking, entertaining, and has well-developed characters and plots (well, most of the time coughcoughDragonball Zcoughcough)?

I love anime myelf, though it would depend what type of anime one would let kids watch and how old are the kids. Some safe series would be something like “Pokemon”; of course, I wouldn’t let anyone below twelve watch 'Neon Genesis Evangelion"–the issues raised there require deep analysis. Kids, and even some teens, might fail to see them and just see it as mecha anime. Some good series I’d recommend for those who love fantasy is either “Magic Knight Rayearth” or “Vision of Escaflowne”, or even “Sailormoon” Heart-warming series that I can thnk of are “Hana Yori Dango” and “To Heart”.

Oh come on, let’s not bash DBZ (well, you can bash GT because it wasn’t Toriyama’s!)

A lot of it was excellent- the manga itself more so than the ‘dubbed’ TV, but even so. . .no, it’s definitely a 12 and up show but it is thought provoking and a good lead in to other anime.

Kenshin is a favorite of mine. 🙂

Watch it with them? That way you can decide what is or is not appropriate.

Oh yes, “Rourouni Kenshin”. Forgot about that one. Loved the series, especially the Shishio arc.

I enjoyed DBZ, but come on, it’s like prolonging one’s agony. A typical episode goes like this: Gokou and his opponent stand off, hardly movng, for almost one whole episode. ometimes it goes on to two episodes. This stare fest is very dramatic (of course, sarcasm intended). One of them finally blinks, and the episode ends. Next episode–see when Gokou finally blinks as well… Okay, that might be a little bit of an exaggeration, but anime fans have seen this. DBZ is enjoyable in the fight scenes (you get to see Gokou beaten up in different ways), but becomes tedious in the staring fests.

I know, Milliardo, but that is mainly because they cut out so much of the original Japanese animation! (Especially the songs.)

And it depends on the actual saga. DragonBall is much “cuter” and with less ‘stare’ fighting. And even Frieza, which had more side plots, was less ‘stare’ than Cell. . .yeah, by the time Majin Buu came along, and after the kids fought, it was slow, but you just couldn’t help but hope for a plot twist. And Hercule (Mr. Satan) was always good for a laugh. . .

And at least it was more entertaining than the latest “Sailor Moon”, right?

Hahahaha. Haven’t you heard? Pokemon is “satanic” and “promotes an occult culture”.

I’m serious. People -ACTUALLY- mean it. Want more info? I can give a link. It’s ridiculous.

I grew up watching Star Blazers and I couldn’t imagine a future for my children without it.

Other Anime could be ok but I’ll tailor it on a case by case basis. I’m not so afraid that they’ll watch something fantastic as I am that they’ll watch something idiotic.

Well, since I live in the Philippines, most of the original BGM is intact, as well as those scenes with blood (I understand the one aired in the U.S. edited the blood as well).

Dragonball’s better, precisely because of that.

The live-action one?

Have any of you heard of Last Exile? It’s a great title to watch with the whole family. Mostly clean, with very little violence. And a great soundtrack too! BTW, here’s a link to check out. It has anime reviews and I’m a member of the site as well: The Christian Anime Alliance.
