When you comit a mortal sin do you lose the Holy spirit?
When you sin, do you feel the need to goto confession?

Do you feel remorse?

If anything the Holy Spirit it trying to help you to repent and atone for the sin. You choose to either allow this Grace to help you reconcile with the Father and the Son, or you reject it and face the Lord’s justice instead of his mercy.

You can’t receive communion …so you lose being in the state of grace . That can be the Holy Spirit.

Yes.

One is no longer in a state of grace.

But the Holy Spirit continues to work on one…

If such should happen - seek to make an act of perfect contrition right away and get to confession. (see catechism)

The Holy Spirit can give you perfect contrition and thus return you to a state of grace and being a temple of the Holy Spirit …of the Holy Trinity.

Is your question concerned with the personal indwelling of the Holy Spirit in your soul? I’m not a theologian but, yes, it seems to me you lose the personal indwelling of the Holy Spirit in your soul when you sin mortally. I understand you lose the state of grace when you sin mortally and the personal indwelling of the Holy Spirit in your soul seems to presuppose being in the state of grace.

However, the Holy Spirit continues to be with you, as he is with all creation, keeping you in existence and providing for you. And, no doubt, he continues to give you graces to help you repent of your sins and return to the state of grace.

I would say generically, when we sin we drive a wedge between God and us. This wedge makes it harder to hear God within us and as we repent we remove this barrier. Can we still here God when we are in sin? Yes, but it can be more difficult.

TrueToFaith,
Bookcat has this exactly correct.
Just because one is nolonger in a state of Grace does not mean that the Holy Spirit has abandoned us in any way… as John3:16 clearly points out.
It is OUR personal acceptance or rejection that will lose for us the Grace of God for all eternity. However, God is a merciful God (ie. the Divine Mercy, ) and has sent us the sacraments and the Holy Spirit thru which we may reconcile ourselves to His love and mercy.
