I found a game on the internet called battle vs. chess, on its original site you have to pay for it to download it, but on another site its free to download. Should I do it or is it a sin.

It is a game. IMHO just a game.

but when you get addicted to it that makes you abandon your prayers and daily life, IMHO it’s a form of idolatry, idolatry in the term of being a slave to something (money, etc), being overly too attached to something. do not gamble with real money.

just don’t get addicted to it 🙂

It sounds like your concern is that one site wants to charge you for the game and the other is giving it away and that if you downloaded the free version you might feel, or be accused of, stealing? In my opinion, no, I don’t see that as being a sin as long you are dealing in good faith. Besides, nothing is really free. That site just really wants your e-mail address so they can sell it to advertisers.

A lot depends on exactly what type of site is allowing you to download this game for free. Is it a torrent site where the game is being shared illegally? Or is it a reputable site that is offering the download for free as a sort of promotion?

If the former, then, yes, it would be wrong. If the latter, then it would be fine to download it.

That game is still under copyright, and still being actively sold by the developer. Any site currently offering it for free would probably be doing so illegally. I do not think you can download this game for free morally. Send me the site offering it for free in a pm and I’ll check it out for you.

Unless it is a place like Amazon or the Apple App store.

True.

OP, that first link is to a download site, and anything you get from it would be obtained illegally. The other two are legally offering the game for purchase.

As others have pointed out, it would very much depend on the game copyright conditions and site that is offering it for free. If it’s an illegal download you would be depriving people of their rightful money (and when a big business loses profit it’s the people of the shop floor who are the first to go) - some people think it’s no big deal but if a lot of people do it there would certainly be a knock-on effect.
