Do you think the pope or the future popes will and can change the dogmas or the tradition?

Dogmas are doctrines that have been definitely defined as necessary to believe for our salvation. So, no, no pope is going to change any of them, although dogma may be defined from existing doctrine, if the pope believes it’s necessary.

If by tradition you mean Sacred Tradition, again no, this cannot and will not be changed. If you mean disciplines and devotions, yes, they can be changed and often are.

Absolutely, NO. Doctrine/Dogmas cannot change. Even Popes cannot change them.

If a Pope tried to change dogma, he would be trying to falsely teach faith/morals and the Holy Spirit would prevent him from doing this. No need to worry.

The next Pope would probably straighten things out or clarify things. I worry more about mistranslations and misinterpretations.

Do you think any pope in the future will do it?
It has been 2,000 years and 266 popes, and it’s still the same faith. So, why expect the Church to change the faith now? I think that if a pope were about to teach a heresy he would either have a change of heart or drop dead before he could do it since it is ultimately God who is guiding the Church. The reason that the Church doesn’t change is because God doesn’t change.

Wow, I could spend all night on this thing.

Here is my answer from an un-educated catholic…meaning no formal schooling on teachings of the church. A dogma would be a Truth brought to light through His Body, the Church. There is only one Truth and it is Eternal because God is Truth and He is Eternal. Jesus gave to Peter the power to bind and loose. He was the rock that the house of the church was to be founded. Cuz of course a house not built on rock would not stand. And the gates of hell will not prevail against the church. So If the church built upon apostolic succession is the Body of Christ and the gates of hell can not prevail against it. Would be contradictory to Scripture, God, and Truth to think that a Dogma/truth could change.

Another way to look at it. The is only one Truth but many untruths. One answer to 2 plus 2 that is right. But an unlimited number of wrong answeres…lies…untruths. As Padre Pio said…anothing that brings doubt, anxiety, worry, or debate. Is not of God. So best thing to do when questioning the truth is to pray to God to show you the truth and when He does, you will not have that doubt or question the truth. I had the same questions and doubt for 30 years. I learned to pray and God showed me the truth and I have become an active member in my Catholic church again.

I agree with others,no Pope will change the dogma of our Faith.

I strongly think it may change.
Lets look at the history of the Israelites. When they were delivered from captivity in Egypt (read Exodus in the bible), it reached a time when people had taken up so many new believes that God had to call for a review the Covenant; its called Deuteronomy in the Bible.

Likewise, they were taken to captivity in Babylon, and took up so many teachings. God raised Nehemiah & Ezra who restored the Focus on God.

Lets look at Dogmas; what are they in essence? It’s an ideology which should not be questioned, challenged or proofed as either true or false!
Human can err; Adam the first person to be created by God erred by doing what he was instructed not to do. Moses erred by striking a stone he was told to talk to, Peter the apostle at one time denied Jesus. Judas, one of the 12 apostles betrayed Jesus etc, etc
Its called human weakness!
So, if God sees that the faith will be compromised, as he has often done, He’d do it again.

You seem to have tied yourself into a Gordian Knot of theology here. 🙂 Infallibility has no connection to impeccability.

The Church cannot err in matters of faith and morals because Jesus promised her the guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit who makes certain that the Church remains faithful to Christ and his teachings, not fallible men alone.

So no, the Church cannot and will not make any changes to dogma or doctrine. The Holy Spirit will not allow it lest Christ be made a liar.

It is not within the power of a pope to change a dogma. He couldn’t even if he wanted to. In fact, Papal Infallibility also protects him against doing such a thing, in addition to allowing him to make ex cathedra statements.

That said, it is perfectly within his powers to change many church traditions that don’t rise to the level of doctrine or dogma, such as a discipline like clerical celibacy.
