Do you unknowingly support abortion?

I was quite surprised this week about a discussion I had at work with fellow catholics, and wondered if others have had the same experience. I work for a state agency where the employees are represented by a very large union. The time of year when we can adjust our healthcare provider is upon us, and we were just informed that the union is again making special provisions for union members only.

I do not belong to the union because of it’s stance, and political backing ( as well as financial), supports abortion, same sex marriage and fetal steam cell research.

The healthcare provisions that the union has/is making is that only union members are eligible for eye care coverage and dental coverage. (Basic emergency healthcare is available for all employees)

When I spoke to a group of my catholic friends about the union, and what it supports, many said they had no choice but to be a member. They say that they have families and need the eye care and dental care that the union offers. When I mention the moral issue about what the union represents, I get the same old answer … " Well I don’t support abortion, even if the union does"

Any advice on how I can open their eyes to their actions?

In His Peace

P.S. Each union member was told that $5 of their dues went directly into the New York for Kerry Campagin.

There was a time in the U.S. that unions were a good thing. They looked out for workers and protected them from oppression.

In the past, I had a job where I was required to join a union. I hated it. They took my money and did nothing for me. I made only slightly more than minimum wage.

I have heard lots of stories about how unions support the evils you mention. How sad.

Many professions have alternative organizations to unions that provide many necessary services. For example, for teachers, there is the Association of American Educators in lieu of the NEA. The AAE provides a wonderful regular newsletter for its members, a good insurance policy (for liability suits) – and information about other issues that teachers need to be informed of. Other professions have similar alternatives, although you may have to dig a bit to find out what and where they are.

Good luck! and God bless you!

A pro-life union member recently won a court case to prevent his union money from going to pro-abortion groups. I don’t remember the periodical it was in.

You could contact the American Center for Law and Justice to see if you have a case of discrimination b/c you are not being afforded the same beneifts b/c you refuse to join the union and allow your funds to go to ungodly causes. www.aclj.org

Here’s some stuff I found online:

Your union may have a little known and well concealed opt out method that they will go out of their way to make it hard to execute.

For example, in my state once a year you can personally go in to the right person and obtain an original form (no faxes, copies of last year’s form, etc). You must get it in person, they do not appear to mail it. Then you get the opportunity to have it signed by the right person within a short time limit (hope they aren’t on vaction or difficult to get to) and your tiny little money won’t go to support political candidates. Instead it is directed to a minor, uninteresting scholarship fund that you probably don’t care about.

Then for kicks, you have to do this every single year (in Sept only). Talk to the union rep. They should know how to do it.

I have to be a member of my union, I work for a county, for a DA’s office… It makes me sick. No choice.

I think letting people know this is happening is a place to start. I live in California and work for a large corporation. It’s the annual renewal time for us also for health insurance. Last year, I noticed that the HMO options available had coverage for “voluntary interuption of pregnancy”. So I picked their “traditional plan” which is more expensive. I didn’t see abortion coverage specifically mentioned in that plan’s documentation. That doesn’t mean it’s not there. I just don’t know. I have a bad feeling these insurance companies are all starting to provide that type of coverage. I don’t know what they’re responding too. Some liberal state laws are being enacted that require it. Some “progressive” companies are requiring it. The whole subject sickens me.
