Good post. You’re right, some of those “boring parts” serve a purpose, like the many chapters of Exodus where the requirements of temple construction are laid out in painstaking detail. So when non-Catholics like to question our “ornate” Churches, those chapters provide a great answer: God wants them that way.

One of the greatest gifts to English-speaking Catholics would be for Ignatius Press to finally complete the entire Bible for its Catholic Study Bible series. The NT is complete and probably just over half of the OT, but I long for the day when the entire Bible is available. As far as I’m concerned, no other Bible edition can compare.

I agree. I just got the Ignatius NT this Saturday. I started at the very beginning and am reading it straight through savoring every verse, every footnote, every commentary. Even with only the NT complete there are still plenty of references to the OT. I was just watching an interview with Scott Hahn from 2012. He said he hoped the complete OT would be out by 2015. That didn’t happen. I’m not aware of when the plan is to have it completed and published.

I really like my Didache Bible, especially since the commentaries are linked to the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The Appendices include a glossary and maps.
Unlike my Catholic Answers Bible, it only references the Document on Divine Revelation, while the Catholic Answers Bible has the complete document.
The Didache does recommend having a reading plan, setting aside a few minutes a day, for reading Scripture, in order to get the most benefit.

Since the RSV is the most universally accepted, it is the one that I carry with me. It is also the translation that was used when I was living overseas.

I typically pray the Lord’s prayer daily along with my own prayers. The Psalms however are a wonderful collection of prayers and hymns that should inform our own.
