Do you weep when you are at prayer?

I once heard the “gift of tears” explained in this way: As God moves nearer to the soul, it is a movement so profound and so silent, our being knows it has been touched, and yet does not understand. The tears are a manifestation of that movement of God that really transcends even our emotions.

Yes, sometimes. There was a time I weep coz I can’t pray. I want to feel something but can’t feel anything so I weep. . . but then weeping is some sort of feeling.

Thank you, Tigg… that was a beautiful explanation.

To BarbaraTherese: The link to Catherine of Siena was very helpful. Now I understand much better what is happening.

At times.

I believe that tears during prayer are natural and sometimes coming from the Holy Spirit entering me. Sometimes tears come out of nowhere without any hint of them coming. Most of the time it’s from adoration or praying the Rosary.

I don’t really question it much and just let it happen. Praying the Rosary with being able to really focus is a very powerful amazing thing.

I think it’s normal. All our hearts need healing and we are all flawed, we are all unworthy to receive the love given to us by the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, unworthy of His mercy, yet it is been given to us freely. Knowing that and feeling that, it is hard not to weep, I think.

If you can focus and feel enough, it’s hard to not be naturally reverent, humble, unworthy and grateful.

I can focus on every part, because I take about 2 hours saying it :o. Obviously, I’m on summer vacation.

IMHO, I think what happens is we reach a level of prayer, or a closeness to God, that our spirits become so overwhelmed by the beauty and holiness and nearness of God (even though we don’t consciously understand what’s happening, our souls know) and what happens is some kind of spiritual “overload” (like an electrical short circuit), and that’s when the tears come.

It’s different from tears of sorrow for sin, although it includes that kind. It’s tears of joy and love and repentance and awe all mixed together.

If my lift gets me to Saturday Vigil Mass early enough, then I can go to Confession and I always weep silent copious tears with my Act of Contrition. Father has a good happy and comedic attitude to it reflecting Joy - “Straighten yourself up before you leave, or they’ll think I have been bashing you around again!”:rotfl:…that puts me out of the Confessional smiling!
