Does anyone like Leo X?

Umm, I don’t want to start any nasty historical debates concerning sensitive topics…

But I wonder if anyone else likes Leo X ? Ok, so he wasn’t Mother Theresa, But how can you not like a short, round, near-sighted, amiable Pope with a big white elephant in red shoes named Hanno ? 🙂

and does anyone like Julius II ? Does anyone privately like the idea of a Pope in Plate Armor leading Papal armies and hurling excommunications right and left? 🙂

Oh, and I miss the Papal Tiara , it was pretty. :o
 
To me, the tiara was the ugliest headgear ever invented.

But that’s just my opinion.

Leo X is said to have quipped, “God has given us the papacy. Let us enjoy it.” Hardly edifying.
 
He’s a Pope, and we must respect our fathers, so I like him 🙂
 
Leo X apparently tried to treat Luther with some amiability and even ordered that he be given safe conduct, effectively removing the threat of burning at the stake, at least in a legal sense.

Julius II obviously missed his true calling I think, but he was also committed to reform and basically tried all the reforms that would be tried at Trent, but he was unseccessful due to multiple obstacles.
 
Respecting a person for his office does not bring with it the necessity of liking him personally.

I respect the president. I don’t like Obama.

I’ll settle for Sylvester II, who got the reputation of being a magician because of his maths.​

Though, Sylvester I - Constantine I’s Sylvester - was said to have killed a dragon.

If Hanno had become Pope, in the way that Caligula’s horse Incitatus almost become a consul, that would have been striking. It’s a pity we can’t pray to St. Guinefort - but he’s the next best thing to a four-footed Pope:

I think it might be a reasonable compromise to restore just about anything in the Coronation of the Pope, apart from the Coronation as such. The words from Jeremiah 1 describe one aspect of the Pope’s mission rather well. But on no account should the Pope be or seem an earthly lord - that is contrary to the meaning of the Pope’s mission. But by restoring the rest, the purpose of the Papal office would be set forth more clearly.​

I agree. I respect the papacy, but I have a strong dislike of John Paul II and am glad he’s gone. 🙂
