About 10-15 years ago I remember hearing (or reading) a strange contention that “celibacy” didn’t mean what most people thought it meant. I want to say it was some priest like Andrew Greeley…anyway he said actually it just means that you don’t marry, that’s all. Even though I wasn’t Catholic yet I was still shocked but for a while I believed it because I didn’t know any better. I think it may have been in the 1980s. Of course, I jumped to the conclusion that a priest was therefore free to have affairs…but that didn’t seem right either. Nothing was mentioned about chastity.
Does anyone remember this argument? Is it technically correct? It did seem like he may have had an agenda at the time.
