Hi, to all and Good Day. I am posting this thread question in hopes of gaining a deeper understanding of marian theology.

I have a very close practicing protestant friend that is puzzled about Marian theology. We have spent much time discussing Marian theology which is accpeted within the Catholic church. Sadly though my close freind just is unable to accpet the churches teachings on Mary.

Some of the obejects I have come across by protestants is as follows…

1.)God has no mother.Mary was the mother of Jesus and should be honored, but the Catholic church takes it to far…to the point it seems they view and treat Mary like a God and put her on the same level as God.

2.) There is no scriptural basis for Mary accending into heaven or being sinless.etc

Hence, I want to explain marian theology in loving caring way, even though we may have opposite understanding of Mary. So if anyone has any thoughts and opinions on this topic please feel free to post to this thread. Thank you and God Bless.

As I tell my children, Mary is the deep end of the theological pool. It’s tough to take a non-swimmer and throw them in the deep end and expect them to take to the water!

I would deal with the second issue first: "there is no Scriptural basis for…"

How consistent is yor friend with this logic? For instance, if you asked your friend if he/she believes the Gospel of Matthew to be Scripture and therefore inspired by God, I would assume the answer would be a resounding “yes!”

But where is the Scriptural proof for this belief? Where in the Bible does it tell us Matthew is Scripture? Inspired?

I would expect an appeal to 2 Tim 3:15-16, to which you would reply, “AMEN, but that doesn’t tell me Matthew is inspired and therefore Scripture and therefore belongs in the Bible.”

If your friend can believe that which is not explicitly stated in the Bible as a matter of faith (the canon of Scripture) then your friend can accept that which is implicit in Scripture (Mary’s assumption) [note: make very clear to your friend that only Christ ascended in to heaven; Mary was assumed by His power]

As for the first issue, Mary being the Mother of God…
Jesus is God
Mary is the mother of Jesus
Mary is the mother of God

There is no separating Christ’s human and divine natures in the person of Christ; one does not give birth to a nature, but to a person. The Person to whom Mary gave birth was God the Son, the Second Person of the Trinity.

EDIT: to answer the thread title’s question, no. The titles speak to Mary’s unique role in cooperation with God’s plan for salvation(CO-operation, hence, Co-Redemptrix); the titles do not mean that Christ alone cannot or does not mediate to the Father for us or Redeem us.

Ask your friend, if he/she were to lead someone to a knowledge and acceptance of Christ, would that not mean he/she was cooperating with God in His plan for that person’s salvation?

What did Elizabeth mean when she said, “And how is it that the mother of my Lord should come to me”? It’s odd that your friend needs a Scriptural Basis for point number 2 (which there is) but ignores the Scriptural Basis given for point number 1.

=PasionCatechist;4830253]Hi, to all and Good Day. I am posting this thread question in hopes of gaining a deeper understanding of marian theology.
OK, allow me to attempt to assist. In order to do so one MUST accept what Jesus says! 2 Tim. 3: “16 All scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”
1.)God has no mother.Mary was the mother of Jesus and should be honored, but the Catholic church takes it to far…to the point it seems they view and treat Mary like a God and put her on the same level as God.
Friend you have an impropper and incomplete understanding. Please read on.
2.) There is no scriptural basis for Mary accending into heaven or being sinless.etc
Luke 1:**"26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God **to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And he came to her and said, “Hail, full of grace, * the Lord is with you!” *

"When something or someone is “full” it obviously means that there is no room for anything else.“Full of GRACE” has to mean without sin. Can’t be “full of Grace” if sin is present.

Mary’s assention is based on the following facts.

Mary is the Mother of Jesus; Jesus is God; therefore Mary is and must be the Mother of God. Simple Logic.

Luke chpt. 1"29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be. 30 And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33* and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there will be no end." 34* And Mary said to the angel, “How shall this be, since I have no husband?” 35* And the angel said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born * will be called holy, the Son of God. **

Mary is the Mother of God

Twice in the Old Testament, Yahweh God took special Body and soul to heaven:

Heb.11:5 " 5* By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death; and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was attested as having pleased God."

Genesis 5: "24* Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.

and 2 Kings “9 When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you.” …11* And as they still went on and talked, behold, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. (Picture) 12 And Elisha saw it and he cried, “My father, my father! the chariots of Israel and its horsemen!” And he saw him no more.”

Now The BVM is…

The Mother of Jesus who is God Lk. 1:35

The Spouce of The Holy Spirit who is God Lk. 1:35

and God the Father Chose Mary out of all people in all ages to be the Mother of His Son.

Logic and historical evidence of Mary’s Home, mary’s empty tomb, and Mary’s UNnique and Special Role in our redeemption (made Jesus who is God present to us!) give clear evidence that she too was taken Body and Soul into heaven.
Hence, I want to explain marian theology in loving caring way, even though we may have opposite understanding of Mary. .
As far as mary being “co-redeentrix.” At this juncture it is only a Catholic Theological discussion. Many are pushing for it to be “defined,” but to this point it has not happened.

The progression is: 1. Discussion 2. Defined Doctrine 3. Defined Dogma. Again, right now it is still in the discussion stage.

Futher info. The discussion in no way implies an equality with God!

What is being discussed is the POSSIBILITY that Mary in the signifiant role that she played in Making Jesus Present to us, always full of grace and without sin (made necessary because Jesus is God; God is and must be perfect; and therefore Mary had also to be made perfect, which in fact was accomplished therough the merits of Her Son )Jesus. (With God time does not exisit.)

That as a reward for who She is, what She has accomplished, all that She suffered and endured… That God permits all grace to flow from God to Mary and Mary to us. Jesus remains the ONLY Redeemer, Mary is in the role of assistance!

Jesus is God.
Mary is the mother of Jesus.
Therefore, Mary is the Mother of God.

This does not mean that Mary is equal to God or that she existed before God (as our mothers exist before us). However, the tautology is correct and protects important truths about the Incarnation - truths that were first denied by the Nestorian (or Arian) heresy in the fifth century (I think). The heresies all run together after awhile.

EARLY PROTESTANTS ON MARY, MOTHER OF GOD

Martin Luther

She became the Mother of God…on this there follows all honor, all blessedness, and her unique place in the whole of mankind, among which she has no equal, namely, that she had a child by the Father in heaven, and such a Child…Hence men have crowded all her glory into a single word, calling her the Mother of God.

“A new lie about me is being circulated. I am supposed to have preached and written that Mary, the mother of God, was not a virgin either before or after the birth of Christ…Scripture does not say or indicate that she later lost her virginity.”

Heinrich Bullinger (Early Protestant Reformer)

Elijah was transported body and soul in a chariot of fire; he was not buried in any Church bearing his name, but mounted up to heaven, so that…we might know what immortality and recompense God prepares for his faithful prophets and for his most outstanding and incomparable creatures…It is for this reason, we believe, that the pure and immaculate embodiment of the Mother of God, the Virgin Mary, the Temple of the Holy Spirit, that is to say her saintly body, was carried up to heaven by the angels.
2.) There is no scriptural basis for Mary accending into heaven or being sinless.etc
There is a deeper issue here. Your friend believes that everything has to be proven from the Bible. Why? Where does the Bible say that everything must be found in scripture? Short answer? Nowhere.

Being a co-redemptrix, requires that Mary would have cooperated (co-operated or helped by her role and sufferings) with Jesus in man’s redemption. This does not mean she is on the same level as Jesus as Redeemer, she is not, but it is said (and I believe) that she cooperated with Jesus perfectly and was most instrumental in helping bringing about man’s redemption.

I learned that Jesus and Mary are inseparable. Wherever one is, there is the other also. This applies to the spiritual world. “Co-Redemptrix,” “Mediatrix,” and “Co-Savior” all make sense to me. Can there be salvation without all the graces she bestows?

I guess what I was trying to say is that I don’t really know but I’m open to the thoughts. Why inadvertently undermine Mother Mary?
