Does conditioner clean your hair?

Hi, not sure if I can make a topic about this, but I was just wondering, if this is true. I want to stop shampooing my hair because it only makes it dry and damaged.

Thanks!

Perhaps you need to try a different shampoo, and also the same brand conditioner for your hair type. A conditioner alone will not clean your hair.

Conditioners generally coat your hair in some way. They do not clean.

If you are having a lot of trouble with shampoo, you can do one of the following:
  • Switch brands of shampoo and try one for really dry hair.
  • Obtain a non-shampoo hair cleaning product at the salon. These are often called “No-Poo”. I have sometimes used them, as they are marketed to people with dry and curly hair like mine, but they are expensive and in one case i thought the stuff smelled bad.
  • Use a “home remedy” cleaner such as diluted vinegar, or diluted vinegar and baking soda, or (for really dry hair only) mayonnaise. Warning: using this stuff will make your hair smell like vinegar or mayo. I used to use mayo in college as I could get packets free from the school cafeteria, but I often had to use a little shampoo afterwards to remove some of the oil and all of the smell. Also, some people use eggs but I am not big on that because I have read stories where people used eggs and hot water and the egg basically cooked right onto their hair.
  • Use plain water. I sometimes do this and just shampoo every other time.
  • Use a very tiny amount of shampoo.

Thanks! That’s really helpful-I find the less I shampoo, the healthier my hair is.
I have tried different shampoos, none of them seem to work too well (my hair either gets too greasy or too dry, usually too dry though)

@Dlee
I’ll tell you if it works

My hair is so much healthier since I stopped shampooing frequently.

I shampoo my hair every 2 - 3 weeks. Between I will rinse it every few days. I use a silicone scalp brush to with every shampoo/condition/rinse to lift debris out of my hair and brush my hair every day with a natural bristle brush to distribute the natural oils down the hair shaft.

You can also try sulfate-free shampoos, too.

Some find that the sulfates/detergents in the shampoos may be too drying.

I have found though that I don’t particularly care for those types of shampoos. I need some kind of cleanser in my shampoo, as my hair is too oily. Sulfate-free shampoos leave my hair feeling too dry and too frizzy.

I have naturally curly/wavy hair, so I need something that is also a bit moisturizing.

I tend to use shampoos and conditioners that have oils in them.

You might want to find ones like that to try. There are all kinds of shampoos like that on the market now, as that seems to be the trend. 🙂

Yes, thank you! I heard that coconut oil is good for your hair, and there seem to be a lot of shampoos with it.

There are facebook groups and Reddit discussions on the “curly girl method”. Would be worth looking at that.

It’s interesting to me that there is so much variety in hair types. If I don’t shampoo my hair (what’s left of it 😣) every day, it’s a greasy mess. 😝 I think if I used only conditioner with no shampoo, it would be even worse.

I agree with you regarding just washing with conditioner.

Some of them have silicones in them for coating the hair.

I don’t think this conditioner-only method would work for me if I just wanted to use them without any kind of shampoo involved at some point along the way.

My hair just gets too oily, too.

You would be amazed how that changes when you stop shampooing and start stimulating the scalp. My hair used to get so greasy I would often wash twice a day (if I had an important event that night).

Very interesting. I’m not sure I have the courage to try that out. Maybe when I have a week off of work. 😆

I read about co-washing your hair but I only tried once with an average supermarket brand and my hair was limp and dirty looking with strands sticking together. People with naturally very dry hair (like afro hair) who also let it air-dry were giving it good reviews on MakeupAlley forums. I have dry curly hair and thought it would work for me. Apparently you need special conditioners for that. People who are interested in doing this usually are interested in healthy products and were recommending organic conditioners that there pretty expensive.
You can try applying coconut oil on your hair and leave it one hour before washing and it will soften it a lot. Plus it is easier to get out of hair than other oils I’ve tried (olive oil or mink oil). You only need one extra shampooing than usual to get it out. Plus coconut oil smells lovely .
And change shampoo to SLS free shampoos.

When I had long hair (I’m a man), women used to stop me in the street and ask what I used on my hair because it was so soft and shiny, they used to touch it too.

My reply was I didn’t cover my hair in chemicals, I didn’t use any conditioner and didn’t wash my hair every day, how dirty can it be?

In a care home conditioner can help after shampoo as some get their hair dirtier than we ever will in our daily lives.

Do you wash your hands in two soaps?

no,the purpose of conditioner is to reduce the dryness and frizzyness but it does not help to clean hair.
