Does God punish people for their sins here?

Hi,

This is a question that is very much in the forefront of my mind. Can the events of Enron, 9/11, and the deep recession we’re in right now be seen as punishment from God to get a Christian nation to change our ways and not be so greed centered?

Can he do this on an individual basis as well?
