Does going to midnight Mass on Chrismas eve (or the children’s Mass at 4PM) fulfill the obligation to attend Mass on Christmas morning? I am thinking either of these options fulfill the Christmas day obligation as it is similar to attending vigil Mass on Saturday evening and that covers your Sunday obligation. I realize that every Sunday is a holy day of obligation, so if vigil Mass the night before fulfills the obligation, would not a vigil Mass on Christmas eve also fulfill the obligation? Thank you!

Hi,

Any Mass for the vigil of Christmas fulfills the obligation to attend Christmas Mass. However, it does not fulfill the Sunday obligation. This year one must attend Mass for Sunday as well: either the Sunday vigil Mass on Saturday night or a Mass for Sunday on Sunday.
