Does lust need to have a carnal element before it is sinful?

OK, the only way I can explain this is to give the actual situation.

I was looking at what I could watch on TV, and happened to notice that I was feeling an element of sexual tension. Nothing I consented to, but it was there, and I didn’t run away. That’s putting myself in a near occasion of sin, which in itself is at least a sin of omission.

I noted that there was one show I wouldn’t watch because I was worried I would have lustful thoughts about a particular actress.

Then a little later, I remember thinking to myself ‘she’s a very attractive woman’ - from that point on I had, in a sense, consented to take pleasure in her physical attractiveness - again, I didn’t run away, but my mind wandered to a show I had seen her in before, nothing sexual, nothing inappropriate per se, just a scene from a show, which had her in it, and I noted that she looks attractive.

Did I commit a mortal sin? There was awareness and consent. I don’t know whether simply smiling at the fact that I find someone attractive counts as covetousness. I wasn’t thinking of having sex with her, and deliberately avoided the show where I thought I might be pulled into those kinds of thoughts. Nonetheless, on some level, I have still consented to taking pleasure from the ‘sexual values’ of another person. I have heard it said that there are no venial sins against the 6th and 9th commandment, they are always grave matter. Is this a mortal sin?

In other words, do you have to imagine some kind of sexual contact with the other person before it’s the sin of lust, or is just taking pleasure in their fully-clothed physical attractiveness when they are not your wife a sin?

If this is all it takes to fall into mortal sin, I don’t know how I will ever begin dating or discerning a vocation to marriage (which I do believe I am/may be called to).

I believe that you are attaching too much to this situation. Remember, you are only human and just like the rest of us you will have these thoughts/feelings. All that matters here is your true intent (focusing on that thought) or an intent to carry on/carry out this thought/fantasy. Try not to be too hard on yourself in these situations, believe me in my 50 years I have had some thoughts that were real dooseys but I did not have to act on them and just pushed them away. Hang in there with your calling!!! We need some honest clergy out there!!

As long as you didn’t start idolizing her. You didn’t do anything wrong.

God made some very beautiful people. God also made us so that we are attracted to the opposite sex.

There is a difference between thinking someone is beautiful and thinking about them sexually.

The act of worrying of lusting is in itself a lust.

Lust, from the word “luster” refers to wanting something so much that it gains a priority in your heart high enough that you are blinded as to your real situation and needs. Any emotion that is felt so strong as to blind you of your real needs, is a lust, including anger and fear (worry).

Having faith means that you have no need to worry, to fear. If you think that one tiny mistake is going to send you to hell, then you do not have faith in Jesus’ principles concerning forgiveness.

In short… “CHILL!!” 😃

I believe that you are really trying to have maximum integrity in your spiritual life and be a loyal and faithful disciple of Our Lord Jesus…and I applaud you for it…it takes courage to try to have that kind of integrity and not fall off on the side of pride and scrupulosity. I have a few thoughts for your consideration…

First…anytime you start of slide into or deliberately begin an examination of conscience…never…never do it without first invoking the Holy Spirit (Come Holy Spirit…)…this invocation for The Spirit’s help and guidance…a call for His Cardinal Virtues (Justice, Prudence, Fortitude and Temperance) and His gifts (Wisdom, Counsel, Knowledge and Understanding…Piety, Fear of the Lord, and Fortitude)…are critical…they free you from being a slave to your own shortcomings/doubts or the times that you live in with its often ill advised (at best) and sometimes simply corrupt advice (at worse)…that is passed on to you.

Second…I recommend a very short but incredible book: Charity and Sex an the Young Man by Father Herbert J. Raterman, S.J. which was originally published in 1967…it is in reprint and published by Roman Catholic Books in Fort Collins, Colorado. It costs @$6.00 a copy and it about 60+pages…not fluff…straight spiritual and practical guidance from a terrific priest and teacher.

Here is a prologue/sample of the book and its author (please forgive me on length)
Fr. Herbert Raterman was confessor and spiritual guide in a Cincinnati Jesuit prep school for many years. He developed a course on women and sex for teenage boys and their fathers, and spoke to them by the thousands. This small book repeats that course, treating the most delicate subjects with plain talk – topics mothers simply cannot raise with their growing sons and many fathers, understandably, find difficult to discuss.
Fr. Raterman for years hosted the “Moments of Reparation” Radio program and says the traditional Latin Mass for Cincinnati Catholics each Sunday. He observes:
**“We human beings are inclined to be selfish and self-centered, and sexual difficulties are often a result of this selfishness. Since **charity draws us out of our own self-centered little world and makes us God-centered and neighbor-centered, you can see how important charity is for your proper sexual development.”

**“Many boys fearing they are insincere stay away from confession because of this thought, “How can I be sorry when I know I am going to sin again?” Talk this over with your confessor. **He knows that you may fall again but he knows this does not necessarily mean you intend to fall again. Just because something happens often does not necessarily mean a person is insincere.… The Sacrament of Penance is not an instant cure; rather, it is like a healing process. So there may be falls again.” **“In time of any kind of temptation… don’t focus on getting rid of the temptation. It is more important to concentrate on relaxing.”
**
Tens of thousands of copies of this book were printed, but it has long been out of circulation. Readers and reviewers in the 1970s said things like this:
“Shows an extraordinary depth of understanding that could only come from years of experience in helping countless boys.”—F.J. Power, SJ, Messenger of the Sacred Heart, 1971
“By all odds the best thing on sex education for the young man that I have seen. It is updated in the true sense, avoiding rigorism but sacrificing nothing of Catholic teaching…Never afraid to emphasize mortal sin but gives useful indications and illustrations for determining it. Solitary vice is dealt with fully.”—Paul Hallett, National Catholic Register
“Handy…the questions and answers [are] explicit without being offensive.”—Liguorian
“Squares perfectly with the traditional morality we have all learned.”—*Bishop Floyd Begin, Oakland, CA, dec. *
Lastly…note the…the virtue of Charity…as part of the title and Father’s comment on Charity and sexual development. This is the real key for all of men…young and old…both single and married…we have to get this* charity* “thing” right re: the opposite sex…of we will mess up our lives and most tragically…the lives of the women in our relationships…even marriage…and even the women we see (movies,TV, in our community. etc without ever getting to know them personally…charity is the key! When young men get this right…women instinctively and intuitively notice something really different about them…they are intrigued by a genuine life of *charity!

Hope that this is somewhat helpful…
