My aunt and uncle are my son’s godparents. Since my grandmother’s death 3 years ago, my aunt has not spoken to any family members due to a problem between her and my mother. While I am not directly involved in this problem, she refuses contact with me and has not had any contact with her godchild, my son. My son will be making his confirmation this school year. I am the only person in my family who is Catholic, besides my aunt. (She married a Catholic). My husband is Lutheran.

I don’t know what role my son’s godparents are required to have in his Confirmation. We don’t have any close friends that I can ask to take on this role. I know alot of fellow parishoners but none well enough. The only person I can even think of possibly asking is our DRE or Deacon, as I know them a little better due to my roles in our parish.

Does my son need to have godparents for his confirmation? He is upset that they have no contact with him and I don’t want him to be embarrassed if his godparents aren’t present and everyone else’s are. He has had enough other family members slight him for other things. Do you have any suggestions?

Dear Moto,

Your son is required to have a Confirmation sponsor, but it does not have to be one of his Baptismal godparents. Most of the time people choose some one else. Are there any young adults that he looks up to in the parish—a teacher or coach? You might ask your priest to suggest someone.
