Do you always have to have an intention for you to sin? What if something went the wrong way?

All actual sin is voluntary, and venial sin can be with partial consent. Sin requires sufficient reflection to be a personal choice.

Catechism of the Catholic Church
1868 Sin is a personal act. Moreover, we have a responsibility for the sins committed by others when we cooperate in them:
  • by participating directly and voluntarily in them;
  • by ordering, advising, praising, or approving them;
  • by not disclosing or not hindering them when we have an obligation to do so;
  • by protecting evil-doers.

so when something occurred and it was totally not your intention, it is not a sin, right?

If you are the same “hello1” with all the other sin questions, please speak to a priest.
Dominus vobiscum
And, what he said below.

An error can occur unintentionally, yet one could be intentionally careless, that is, not caring about what is right or wrong, and that would be a bad intention. One should always exercise a degree of prudence to avoid sin by learning what the sins are and avoiding the near and voluntary occasions of them.

Let’s say you stub your toe and you say bad words. You would not have said bad words if you didn’t stub your toe right? Is that kind of answering your question?

So you realize you have this habit of saying bad words. What can you do? How about making a new habit during the day of saying Praise you Jesus. Then at some time later when you stub your toe, the new habit takes over and you say Praise you Jesus! This is how we over come our bad habits, to recognize them, to decide on an action to change them, then to put the new action in place.
