Does the Book of Judith foreshadow the Blessed Virgin?

Judith 13:23. “And Ozias the prince of the people of Israel, said to her: Blessed art thou, O daughter, by the Lord the most high God, above all women upon the earth.”

Judith 13:25. “Because he hath so magnified thy name this day…”

Judith 15:10-11. “And when she was come out to him, they all blessed her with one voice, saying: Thou art the glory of Jerusalem, thou art the joy of Israel, thou art the honour of our people: For thou hast done manfully, and thy heart has been strengthened, because thou hast loved chastity, and after thy husband hast not known any other: therefore also the hand of the Lord hath strengthened thee, and therefore thou shalt be blessed for ever.”

It does sound like someone we know, doesn’t it? Who could it be? Gosh…I can not remember.

They say we’re not supposed to jump to conclusions about such things. But when you start seeing stuff like this, it forces some pretty rough head scratching. Now I guess I’ll be reading Judith over the 3-day weekend.

The answer is Yes, Judith is a “type” of the Blessed Virgin; in fact, there are passages from the Book of Judith quoted in the traditional Mass for the Assumption.
