Does the Catholic Church accept silent prayer?

I was raised in a Protestant faith tradition that taught that there is no such thing as a silent prayer for Christians? Somehow though I think that statement maybe historically and theologically incorrect. So does the Catholic Church accept Silent Prayer and how is it properly done?
 
Dear B,

I’m not sure what you mean by silent prayer. If you mean praying without using one’s vocal chords, certainly it is allowed. Actually, our Lord cautions against babbling like the pagans do.

Just sitting quietly in the Lord’s presence, keeping vigil and being attentive to Him is the kind of prayer one prays in the quiet of the night.

I don’t know that there is a wrong way to pray silently. What Catholics call mental prayer is a form of silent prayer. For more on this, see:
