I hardly ever watch the news or read the paper because it’s nothing but depressing and totaly biast against just about everything I believe in. one day, though, I stumbled accross and article (I can’t give you the source though) that was talking about illegals in CA protesting for more rights and the CAtholic church was helping them/joined them in their protest. Now, I understand that our church respects the rights of all human beings, but shouldn’t she also be upholding the law? if someone comes here illegally, shouldn’t the church try and help them get back to where they belong? I was just a little disturbed by this and was wondering if anyone else heard anything on this subject. I’m not very knowlageable, but I do live in Florida and I can tell you that illegal and legal immagration have wreaked havoc on some parts of this state. I can’t even order a pizza south of orlando hardly because no one speaks my language!

There are already two threads where this is being discussed. The Church has taken no position on this problem other than what is stated in the catechism. One cardinal has jumped into it, prematurely in my opinion, and that’s what all the ruckus is about. Since the existing laws aren’t being enforced and the proposed law is far from being passed, right now it’s much ado about nothing.

sorry, I did not see that other thread when I posted this. I appologize.

Can you cite the Cathechism verse.
Spank you!

The catechism verse:
2241 The more prosperous nations are obliged, to the extent they are able, to welcome the foreigner in search of the security and the means of livelihood which he cannot find in his country of origin. Public authorities should see to it that the natural right is respected that places a guest under the protection of those who receive him.
Political authorities, for the sake of the common good for which they are responsible, may make the exercise of the right to immigrate subject to various juridical conditions, especially with regard to the immigrants’ duties toward their country of adoption. Immigrants are obliged to respect with gratitude the material and spiritual heritage of the country that receives them, to obey its laws and to assist in carrying civic burdens.

SueKrum,
I live in Florida also, in the Diocese of St. Pete. This Palm Sunday there was a long letter published in our church bulletin from the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops on this issue. Did you get any such letter in your bulletin? You may also want to check out justiceforimmigrants.org for more info. on what the bishops think. I am having a lot of trouble agreeing with the bishops’ position on this one, especially after viewing commentator Michelle Malkin’s blog (michellemalkin.com). Check out her site and see the very racist, radical positions many illegals have taken. I hardly think the illegals are “crying for justice” as the bishops say in their letter. What do you all think?
