Does the CBC lie?

Does the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation lie is the question I want to ask. Yesterday, I watched their coverage of Dr. Morgentaler, the infamous abortionist receiving an honourary doctorate from the University of Western Ontario.

The reporter showed a picture of an old protestor and said that there were mainly old people protesting. Now, on another channel I clearly saw a group of mainly young people protesting abortion. I spoke with my son later in the day and he said that he gets more TV channels than I do, and clearly the protestors were young people. Now, who is right?

After that information from the CBC I wonder if their figure of 300 protestors is accurate, or where there more than that?

I did not see the CBC coverage but I read it on the internet.

There were 600 protesters. The organizers know how many signs they had. All of the signs were used and there were considerable numbers of people who did not have signs. It may have been difficult for journalists to estimate numbers because small groups were spread out over a large area around corners and behind buildings and trees and also people came and went in a very informal way. Unlike a rally, say, where the speaker of the month congregates the disciples of the secular left in a central area and then bellows the party line at them for a bit before running out of steam and then feeling obliged to start a rollicking round of chanting and general roudiness.

The protest, according to the police, was ‘without incident.’ There were different organizations represented: Show the Truth had a very respectable representation from senior citizens. These were mainly from London although there was a young woman from Toronto and a few children who, btw, were very comfortable with the images of the fetuses and happily helped their parents load the boards back onto the trailer. The children seemed to have accepted the fetuses as a kind of ‘children.’

Campaign Life Coalition was there also. This included the Cookes from London and Sharesh Dominic and Jim Hughes from Toronto. There were 3 professors decked out in full academic regalia protesting outside Alumni Hall. There were also 3 pro-abortion protesters, in spite of their agreement to protest on the previous day so as to avoid confrontation.

As well as the media cameras, there was someone recording the faces present. To tell you the truth the journalists looked bored to tears. Heather Hiscox from CBC was set up inside Alumni Hall. Last minute media attention seemed to have been on ‘the invasion of American busses.’ However American visitors were very unobtrusive if they were there at all. How does one differentiate a praying American from a praying Canadian? People were not there to self-identify but to offer themselves as vehicles through which the Lord might work. Well, of course there were exceptions, but none that I noticed from the U.S. So, hats off to our American friends who showed up. :tiphat:

CBC is a publicly funded representative of the self-appointed aristocracy in Canada: the new Family Compact. What kind of coverage did you expect?

Ani:

It was Nancy Wilson of CBC who said that there were 300 protestors. Can’t remember the name of the person she interviewed at the scene.

You are right of course, the CBC, is a tax funded aristocracy - and they certainly don’t share my views on abortion, euthanasia, same-sex marriage and a whole litany of other Catholic doctrines.
The Star mentioned “As about130 pro-life protestors stood silent vigil outside the school’s Alumni Hall, the abortion pioneer received a prolonged standing ovation from some 400 students and their families…”

Maybe so, but when I saw Morgentaler at the end of his address only the faculty seemed to show applause, there were many silent non-clapping people in the audience, too.

Oh well, when my current subscription to the Star runs out it won’t be renewed. I will miss writing letters to them even though they rarely print them.

The Star gave Judy Rebick start-up funding through its Atkinson Fund. Try lifesite for your Catholic news. lifesite.net/

A Canadian runs it, but it is now international in scope and subscribership. It is especially popular, I hear, among Catholics in England.

I never did like Judy Rebick.

Did you read the anti-Catholic rubbish on her website? rabble.ca

Its not a lie - exactly. The Media, especially the Electronic Media, do it all the time. It starts with where they point the camera, then the editors step in and it all becomes where they ‘cut and paste’. In UK we call it ‘spin’ - the angle you put on a story.

On someone’s Blog last week there was a Blog about an anti Rainbow Sash demo somewhere in the States. It was the same thing. One newspaper showed a photo of a dozen noisy Gays and one, solitary Christian on his knees praying, with the storyline that the 'anti’s had failed in their bid to demonstrate because only a few turned up. Another paper on the other hand, showed a picture of thousands of Christians outside the Cathedral. You takes your choice I suppose.

:tiphat:

When you know what information goes out to them and you know what they report, it isn’t a spin anymore; it’s a lie. A spin is an interpretation of the existing facts. A lie is changing the facts to suit the story you already had in your head.

The London local newschannel repeatedly called Dr. Henry Morgentaler either an “abortion activist” or an “abortion crusader.” Right there they informed viewers of their bias. Judy Rebick can rightly be called an abortion crusader while the ‘doctor’ is an abortionist under the guise of crusader for women’s rights. This is an important distinction because a supporter for women’s rights is not necessarily an abortionist.

The reporter also said there were two standing ovations for Dr. M. and only a handful of people in attendance remained seated in silence as everyone applauded.

Another irksome detail which denoted a lack of investigative reporting was the report only two students, to their knowledge, did not show up for their convocation. With all the protest that is hard to believe.

Jim Hughes was interviewed and he made the point about honoring a man who by his own admission is personally responsible for the deaths of over 100,000.

Interestingly, the camera was held too close and too low which gave the prolifers a sinister, distorted appearance.
