Does the Church still teach purgatory?

I recently went into a short debate with my religion teacher on the subject of Purgatory. Not on the existance of it, but rather that the Roman Catholic Church has done away with this belief.

My professor claims she read somewhere that this has happened. I explained something of this nature would be widely known. Have a missed something? Was I sleeping when the Pope made this proclamation?

I had to stop debating her because I really couldn’t prove if there had been something from the Vatican regarding this issue. She did claim that this happened some time ago and that’s where I knew I was correct because it hasn’t been that long since I was away from this website and I figure something of this nature would have been in big bold red letters “POPE SAYS NO PURGATORY”. Well, now I’m just rembling.
