First of all, I would like to apologize if this is not the right category to post under.

A Protestant recently directed me to a website claiming that it proved that the church teaches that salvation is through Mary. I figured that every epistle was being taken out of context, but the context doesn’t change the fact that Ubi Primum says, “For, God has committed to Mary the treasury of all good things, in order that everyone may know that through her are obtained every hope, every grace, and all salvation. For this is His will, that we obtain everything through Mary.”

I’m sure that I am missing something here, my question is what I am missing.

Taken on its own, this quote sounds as if Pius IX worships Mary. Taken in its context, it is clear that he doesn’t. Read the words closely—clearly the Pope’s ultimate reference is to Jesus Christ. He is the foundation who is found “in Mary.” Jesus Christ is the one who is the source for “every hope, every grace, and all salvation,” and he comes to us through Mary.
