Section 71 of the Fourth Lateran Council appeals to Catholics to fight the infidels and take back the Holy Land in the Crusades. The Church offers remission of sins for certain people who offer support for the Crusades. How did the Church determine that this was a just war? Why isn’t this war still being fought since obviously the Holy Land is controlled by Jews and Muslims? Has the Church ever been in support of any other wars and offered remission of sins to those who fought? Is the Church ever likely to support a future war?
