Does the Lord condone polygamy?

I just talked to a someone who left the Catholic church for the LDS church but has drifted away from the LDS church. Anyway, I told her one reason I’m leaving is because the church is not truthful at the beginning, they keep things from people and let them find out later. I told her they pushed polygamy off to the next life. She said that was wrong - Joseph Smith tried to end polygamy and they killed him for it! Uh, I told her I never heard that story before. She rambled on about Smith saying it was ok to marry the windowed women but no one else. She said other men wanted to marry more women, so they killed Smith. I don’t know where she got her story but it’s wrong. lol. Jeesh. She said she was half Cherokee, half Hispanic. She seemed at least 50% cooky.
Her position is likely the result of misinformation, put out by someone who knew better. Smith never tried to end polygamy; he publicly denied it and privately practiced it, justifying it with D&C 132 which was published 33 years later, clearly indicating that it was still of vast importance to the church.

There was a movement to end polygamy after Smith’s murder but it never got any traction until the Federal Government made it clear they were going to seize the temples. Woodruff’s Manifesto was the only course of action he could’ve taken.

I don’t know of any diaries or journals written by those who were in the mob that murdered Smith, but I’m guessing that there are a number of reasons that they wanted him dead, none of which had to do with his wanting to end polygamy.

How come the LDS leaders “Apostles” don’t come out and say - “We prayed and received revelations from God - there is no more polygamy in this life or the next life. Polygamy is over!”

Where did the one thread I created go asking LDS wives about sharing their husbands in the next life? I can’t find it on the boards. Did the whole thing get deleted. Did I touch on a sensitive subject?

There was a comparison between Catholic convents and polygamous marriage where the women are bi-sexual. I think that got it deleted.

I won’t say anything more. :nope:

Probably because, much like never claiming that the ban on blacks in the priesthood was wrong, if previous LDS “prophets, seers, and revelators” were in error, its pretty damaging to their claims of “prophecy” and Apostolic Succession.

So much for the ‘new and everlasting covenant,’ eh?
