Does this bother anyone else? How do you deal?

I was on Facebook yesterday and, of course, one of the trending topics was the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. This brought out so much Anti-Catholic hatred that my blood started to boil. I tried to defend Our Mother and the Church as much as I could without getting hateful.

I’ve also noticed a lot of Catholic pages will always have some Protestants on there decrying our faith and reveling in telling us how wrong we are. How does everyone else deal with this?

In this age of social media and the ability to articulate what comes to mind instantly, I’m not really surprised. People don’t weight their words like they should. When has anyone been convinced of anything by a Facebook comment? I would volunteer never. They are just opinions and nothing really useful or, often, intelligent. Who cares about your opinion anyway? Just because you have an opinion doesn’t mean you should share it.

Think of it this way…protestants, atheists and liberals are all aligned in array against the Church that Jesus founded, the Catholic Church. That is pretty strong evidence of the Truth of the Catholic Church. Be confident in your Faith

Perhaps I am being too sensitive. But it really bothers me when people say horrible, and often untrue things about the faith I love so much.

Pray for them that they may be enlightened to the truth. It is good to pray from a distance so that what they say does not irritate you. Do not read their outrages. Thank the Lord for the gift of faith.

The above is how I have been learning to deal with it. The evil one has seduced them and we don’t want the evil one to win.

Sadly, this attitude has also infected some Catholics, who feel that Marian devotions are “unnecessary” and even Marian dogmas are “optional” or “less important”, present company excluded.

I think the best thing to do is to make acts of reparation for the offences that these men commit against the Immaculate Heart of Our Blessed Lady.

I also came across this. Its especially hurtful when it’s your supposed Catholic family making the remarks. I seriously think my blood pressure would go up every time I went on FB. So what did I do? I quit FB- best thing I ever did. My defenses and remarks were not working, so now I just pray for their conversion.

Sorry to hear about that stuff. It’s always easy and socially acceptable to criticize the Catholic Faith (It’s done in history, english, science, even math!), and I’m also tired of it. I’ve also been trying to do those things, but at the end of the day, they’re not going to have a conversion experience through these comments. But you may be able to lead them to truth.

Honestly, this stuff is everywhere, so that it’s impossible to respond to every attack. If it directly affects you, you can respond without having it endanger your Faith, instead of directly seeking out these things, while praying for these people (Praying for them at Mass and in the Rosary may be the best prayers for them).
I commend your desire to defend the Faith. Maybe if you see something, you can post a link to a Catholic Answers response and just leave the discussion.

Most importantly, pray for young Catholics who fall for these things constantly!

Yeah it’s hard dealing with lies and half truths. I tend to just put the truth out there and walk away. There is no magical cure for stupidity. I keep the mindset that you are not putting the truth out there to change the anti-Catholics mind, you are doing it to strengthen the Catholic, not yet strong in their faith, that might happen upon these posts.

Some times if I am feeling energetic I will go one on one with one of these uncharitable people. However, keep in mind you have no chance beating them with facts that they are unwilling to accept. So I usually take the “I don’t understand” approach. I say I do not understand what they mean by their statements or could they expand on this. Most of them can’t, they are just parrots, repeating the statements they heard. The ones that do respond tend to contradict themselves in other statements. I like to hone in on these contradictions with the “I don’t understand” in this post you state this but then you state that. How do you line these 2 interpretations up to get what you stated here. They will either get angry, hostile, or quit responding. In either case your job is done and the rest of the world can see that this person is just an unkind person blowing hot air.

I also take breaks from time to time. It can become quite overwhelming to the point of not being able to sleep at night.

Well, I try not to bother. Arguments hardly ever make someone change their religion. Just state sources and leave quietly

I totally understand! It seems funny to me…why are some Protestants always looking for a fight with Catholics? It seems that if you love your faith and are secure in your relationship with God, you wouldn’t need to go looking for a fight. Hmmmmm :yup:

I saw that it was a trending topic on Facebook. I dared not click on it because I knew this would happen.

All we can do is pray for them. ‘Oh Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee, and for those who do not have recourse to thee, especially enemies of the Church.’

(Not saying Protestants are enemies of the Church, but there are some decidedly anti-Catholic people out there, Protestants and atheists.)
