There are some fakes in amongst the real ones. This does not state they are all fake, and infact, we know from extracting scrolls in situ, there are genuine artefacts.

It is like anything, sell fake art, relics, money etc, make yourself rich. The Dead Sea Scrolls market is not immune to this. There is a massive black market in relics

The gist of the article is that the head of Hobby Lobby chain of hobby stores, who is a fundamentalist Christian (not a Catholic), decided to start a “Museum of the Bible” and dropped a bunch of money on alleged fragments of the Dead Sea Scrolls for an attraction at his museum, and an investigation now says the fragments he bought were fake.

So headline should be, “Rich Fundamentalist Christian Protestant Got Ripped Off”.

The majority of the Dead Sea Scrolls, which aren’t fakes, are in the possession of the Israeli government, are kept in archival storage by them, and are not for sale to rich Christian guys who want to start a Bible museum.

So no, this doesn’t matter to us Catholics in the slightest.
