There has been a widespread increase of casino gambling across the country in the past, say 15 or so, years. It started out with the Riverboat craze, built up with the Indian reservation developments, and is now moving towards land based casinos.Casinoās opening on reservations donāt equal popping up everywhere.
Governments love this sort of thing as it is seen as easy taxable revenue. Municipalities like it as they look upon it as economic development. And, of course, people in general like it because they show up and gamble.
It would seem that part of the idea originally was to find a way to enable local entities to get a greater slice of the pie. If you can drive on down to the riverboat to bet, then you donāt leave town to spend your money in Vegas. Or, similarly, if people go out to the casino and bet, the government gets in on the kitty - unlike if the only legal form of casino gambling is at an untaxable ācasino nightā Church or charity event.
This all is not much unlike how other forms of gambling (like the lottery) got so widespread. It was happenning, anyway, somewhere. So the government just wanted to get their hands on some piece of the pie.
