I wrote an article about the tv commercial What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. Tell me what you think šŸ™‚ freakmag.com/Gospel_Mag/What_Happens_In_Vegas.html

Good points made. BTW, itā€™s spelled ā€œLas.ā€ The only thing I really questioned is the idea of casinoā€™s popping up everywhere: I donā€™t think thatā€™s happening.

I agree with your basic premise of how what happens in Vegas stays with you and affects you. However, I think that you may be approaching some of the matters noted wrongly.

Is the proliferation of casinos around the country partially due to the popularity of Vegas? Well, perhaps. But, really, all Vegas did was to concentrate and centralize such endeavors which already existed extensively (though sometimes underground) around the country. I mean, afterall, everybody knows very well that the Outfit has been underpinning gambling in the U.S. for the longest time and were the impetus behind making Vegas what it is. They just moved around to operate wherever there was a path of least resistance.

Similarly, yes there are ā€œnew and improvedā€, ā€œbigger and betterā€ (so to speak) strip clubs which continually open all over the place. But is this due to Vegas? Iā€™m not so sure of that. Thereā€™d be something well available on that level with or without Vegas. Long has been. Heck, the Burlesque was popular entertainment back in the day. And have you never heard of the famous fan dancer, Sally Rand, who was a popular attraction at the Century of Progress Worldā€™s Fair in 1933-34?

As far as California being a messed up place regrading morals, try talking to some soldier who went through San Francisco during WWII. They migt be able to share a few stories. Again nothing new here, not Vegasā€™s fault.

Finally, as far as Vegas ā€œno longer being family friendlyā€, come on! When was it really ever? They went through a phase of trying to market it that way and adding some attractions which might appeal to kids, but that is never what the place has been or will be. They merely recognized this honestly after the trial period.

Iā€™m not here to defend Vegas or the commercials which essentially promote immorality. But, I do think that your valid arguement would be helped by offering some better supporting examples.

It just seems here in the Great Lakes, many cities want to be ā€œLike Las Vegasā€ when it come to gambling.

Here in NE Ohio, Cleveland wants gambling to help a suffering economy. Why? Because cities like Windsor, Canada, Wheeling, WVA, Niagra Falls, Canada are taking away $$$ from our region.

Pittsburgh is now the next mahor city that is planning for some form of gambling that goes beyond horse racing gambling.

You may have an angle about how other cities want ā€˜to be likeā€™ Las Vegas.

Casinoā€™s opening on reservations donā€™t equal popping up everywhere.
There has been a widespread increase of casino gambling across the country in the past, say 15 or so, years. It started out with the Riverboat craze, built up with the Indian reservation developments, and is now moving towards land based casinos.

Governments love this sort of thing as it is seen as easy taxable revenue. Municipalities like it as they look upon it as economic development. And, of course, people in general like it because they show up and gamble.

It would seem that part of the idea originally was to find a way to enable local entities to get a greater slice of the pie. If you can drive on down to the riverboat to bet, then you donā€™t leave town to spend your money in Vegas. Or, similarly, if people go out to the casino and bet, the government gets in on the kitty - unlike if the only legal form of casino gambling is at an untaxable ā€œcasino nightā€ Church or charity event.

This all is not much unlike how other forms of gambling (like the lottery) got so widespread. It was happenning, anyway, somewhere. So the government just wanted to get their hands on some piece of the pie.
