In response to a thread about disappointing family vacations, I am curious about how many families *actually go *on family vacations.

Please feel free to share any stories about family vacations (funny or disappointing)

ahhh the good ol’ days!..not too long ago

cabin camping
whale watching
Washington DC in the spring
Disney
Cape Cod
Myrtle Beach
Virginia Beach
Boston
Marco Island
Blue Ridge Mt.
more cabin camping

I wouldn’t trade those days for anything…when you have children it is the only way to go!

Ever since my parents divorced we don’t go on family vacations.

I am sorry to hear. This must be difficult for you.

Even though my ‘kids’ are still home we only recently chose not to take our regular family trip together with them. The feeling was mutual. Maybe someday we will do it again but for now we are letting it go because they are into building relationships with others now. Empty nester. Call me a partial empty nester. 😦 Very awkward sometimes…

We do a big family family vacation every other year. Our kids were spoiled these last two years. We went to Disney last summer with just our family and celebrated my parent’s 60th birthdays and 40th anniversary with an extended family cruise this year.

On the “other” year, we will do a St. Louis vacation and be tourists in our hometown. Fortunately, there’s a ton a free stuff to do around here. Usually, the big thing of the week is going to a Cardinal game and renting a hotel room downtown - the luxury of not having to drive home is a vacation treat.

We have a special savings account with automatic deposit that we put money into specifically for vacations. It’s much easier to enjoy a trip knowing you’ve saved for two years to pay for it.

Yes, we do.

We’ve gone to Disney World, tent camping, cabin camping, Wisconsin Dells, London, lakes in northern Minnesota fishing, Chicago, Colorado…

We love it! We want to show our kids the world!

Thank you for your consideration. I hope your kids will realize how important a family is.

We have done something every year. WE camped when we were broke. We went to state parks usually. There are great sand dunes in Indiana and in Michigan, and we have camped there too. Some years we even camped at Disneyworld. That is lots of fun. We camped in Wisonsin on a family campgrouds of a military base (Ft. McCoy) when my husband would do his 2 weeks of summer camp. He worked all day but could come home at night to us. There was a little lake, and we had our bicycles along. At night we would bicycle all over the Army base. There were lost of deer around to watch.

We rented a cabin at Estes Park Colorado in the mountains at the YMCA Camp. I think this was the best. We had a three bedroom cabin and we met my brother and his daughter there, and we had our 4 kids. It was so amazing, animals everywhere.

We have joined my husband on some of his work trips when he is assigned out of town. We have gone to Omaha Nebraska, Boise Idaho, SF California, New York City, Bloomington Illinois, and Washington DC this way. He works and we tour the town, and then have the weekend together.

We went to Arizona once for a long weekend during the Spring training of the White Sox. There are about 8 or 9 teams that train out there. It is great fun.

We splurged when we thought it was our last family vacation with all of us and we went to Ireland. It was so nice. It was our last time together because the kids are mostly out on their own now.

Our vacations have usually been a week. Once we went for two weeks and that was really nice. Whatever you can do, the kids will build lifetime memories. This has been fun to write and remember even for me.

We do every summer, and we love it! It’s a great time to relax as a family. My mother travels a lot on business, and my father’s a journalist who invariably gets home at 1 or 2 in the morning, so we almost never see each other. That’s part of what makes vacations so enjoyable. 👍

Actually, we just got back from vacation in Florida- Disney World, the beach, and so on. Fabulous time, very relaxing. New York is another favorite spot, because we’re from there originally, and Chicago in the spring for the shopping.

I couldn’t vote! We do go together once a year, but it is not big, or expensive. We go places many hours away, stay in hotels, but keep the budget WAY low! We have gone on several budget beach vacations, we took an extneded “tour of Kentucky” and this year we are traveling to Philadelphia and DC for a “National Treasure” vacation. We usually round out our trips with a visit to DC anyway, b/c we have family there. It is always fun, never too expensive, and we only went on a (sort of) budget Disney trip for the first time last year! (our oldest is 9).

You needed a category for one trip, not close to home, but also not expensive, LOL!

I know 3 different clans that rent a large cabin or house and have Aunts, Uncles cousins & grandparents, the whole kit & caboodle, all together. Family one gathers in the Adirondacks, Family two gathers in Canada and Family 3 gathers at the lake near me. Family 3 has a priest/uncle who celebrates Mass at the local Church when here on vacation…the whole family comes to daily Mass … kinda touching to see.

Family vacations don’t ever need to end …

I’m the one who started the disappointing vacation thread!

We go somewhere every year. The years funds are low, we go to my husband’s hometown, stay at his sister’s and visit family and friends.

This past year we went on the vacation from he**. It was supposed to be a week-long road trip followed by a week at the beach. Instead we were camped out at his sister’s in Tallahassee and spent 4 days at a crappy beach.

We try to do the beach week every other year, renting a house with his family. That’s the best. You’re right on the beach, with all the cousins. We’ve also camped in the Smokies, visited family and friends in Kentucky, North Carolina, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Maine. The great thing is that our friends and family who don’t live in Indiana or Missouri have all relocated from those two states. They are always happy (or they pretend really well!) to see friends/family from “back home”.

By the way, we hardly ever fly. We almost always road trip.

Our fantasy vacation is a road trip to California.

I’m from the Black Hills of South Dakota, so my daughter and I go there at least twice a year for camping, and hanging out. I have a gramma there that we go visit as well.

Now that my cousins have been married and have started having families of their own, we’ve spent the last couple years traveling a few hundred miles to there places as well.

We never travel more than 4 or 5 hundred miles to vacation.

Our Military-family lifestyle has always made many small family trips throughout the year possible, and usually unpredictable. For the past few years we have finally been able to take BIG well-planned family vacations. We went Disney World for 6 days Dec 2003 with my husband, three children, my mom and dad, college-age brother and two sisters. It was awesome! It was a dream vacation for all of us and it was made possible by a military special discount. I am so thankful for that! My parents also paid for alot of it. We stayed on- site at the All Star Music resort. It was truly magical. My husband and I are Florida residents so we purchased the Florida REsident seasonal passes which are good for a year from purchase date. Just my husband, children and I went back again October 2004 for 9 days and 10 nights. We stayed at Shades of Green military resort hotel on site. IT is a hotel paid for by military donations and non-profit organizations and patrons etc. it is not funded by tax dollars or anything. We had such a great time! We went to a polynesian Luau at the Polynesian resort (I dont’ recommend this, I wish we had spent the money on something else) and teh Halloween party. We dressed like pirates and princesses. It was a blast. We could see the Magic Kingdom fireworks from our balcony on the few nights we turned in early! We went to Mass at “Mary, Queen of the Universe Shrine.” Another trip we took this year was to Colonial Williamsburg and Busch Gardens. My children are 2, 4, and 7 so we had a really good time. They dont’ have as much for children on weekdays during the off- season at Col. Williamsburg so my children were not as impressed. Kids learn from Hand’s -on experiences so by the end my poor 4 yr old son was trudging along whining “OH *why *do we have to keep going into all these boring houses???” It was a little disappointing and we felt like it was alot of money wasted on a day of very little interest for our children. I wish we had gone when there are alot of child- friendly activities. My nieces and nephew of the same ages always have a great time there (they have gone 2 years in a row) but they go during the summer.

We are planning a trip to Hawaii this winter, There is a military resort called the Hale Koa on the beach run by the same group as the one at Disney, we are trying to decide whether to fly commercial or take a “hop” on a military plane into CA and then HI. It will be much cheaper but more unprecitable with delays and such.

We love the outdoors so we usually take lots of day trips hiking, fishing, alpine skiing and weekend camping trips. We live near DC, Philly and NYC so there is always something to do or see that we haven’t seen or done yet. We love museums and cultural attractions. We live 20 min from the beach so we like to camp on the beach at Cape Henlopen etc. My husband has been “sitting on alert” alot this summer so we haven’t bee able to go on as many mini-trips as we normally do.

I think that that Disney World resorts are awesome for families, they are experts at customer service and there is something for everyone, golf courses, waterparks, themeparks, night life, night clubs, dining. I recommend doing some research first, to save time and money. Time is most literally money at Disney. Also, keep it fun and know when to take a break. When everyone starts getting tired, hot and cranky, we go back to the hotel for a nap and a dip in the pool. It’s vacation, not a marathon, which is why taking a few extra days at a Disney resort is such a luxury. When I was a kid we went to Magic Kingdom twice for only a day, it left us exhausted and frustrated because you simply can’t do it all in one day. WE also went during the hottest, busiest part of the summer! I researched for months before we took our first big family trip to Disney.

When I was a kid we went to Disney twice, both times during the hottest part of the summer for only one day and we didn’t stay on site. When I planned both of our big Disney vacations I did alot of research. We went during the off season, cooler with less lines. There are alot of easy tricks to learn such as how the park is run, which rides are busy at what times of the day, so that you aren’t waiting in line all day. I decided which resturants we would eat at and the best forms of park transit from one park or resort to another. The food is expensive, but we were able to find some resturants that had the best food for the price, and wasted less money on junk. Staying on site offers alot of great benefits. It is also great to loosely plan your limited time according to what parks suit your needs, and what rides or shows everyone is interested in. Disney can be extrememly frustrating if you don’t let the system work “for” you. I highly recommend “The Unofficial Guide to Disney World” but don’t get too obsessed, just inform yourself make some LOOSE plans and then go with the flow and enjoy!

I am so sorry that you are having a rough time…divorce S**ks.

I never went either, because of divorce. It is very hard for a mother to take children alone on vacation…it feels unsafe to the mom…you hear soo many horror stories.

When you have your own children try to live through their eyes…take them…and in a way you can experience this for yourself!

My husband travels alot…and sometimes we hitch rides with him. This is a very cheap way to go…'cause his company foots the bill for the motel 😃

Just last week we went to Birmingham, stayed in a motel and swam while my DH worked, and when he was done with work we visited the zoo there.

Another cheap vacation: My SIL lives in St. Louis…we visit often. She has a swimming pool 😃

I am the Queen of Cheap vacations! 👍

As a child growing up, my family rarely took vacations except to visit my grandparents in another state. Now I’m married to a man who loves to travel, as I do, so we take the children on many trips.

We go camping on weekends here in Wisconsin, but we also do big international trips. My children have seen Italy, England, Spain and Israel. They were very young for some of these trips, but some they will remember, and we had a great time.

We don’t drive fancy cars. We would rather spend the money on traveling. We plan to go skiing in Colorado or in New Mexico at Christmas. We love going new places and experiencing new things together.

Wisconsin has many fun places to go for day-trips as well. We love Old World Wisconsin, the new art museum in Milwaukee, Summerfest, the state capitol in Madison, the UW-Madison campus, our alma mater, and Shakespeare in Spring Green.

I get excited just typing all of these wonderful places.

I guess I should have made that an option… but from the sounds of your “low budget” vacations, they qualify as expensive to me, lol. Anything with hotels is expensive to me. Again it is all about perspective. I have 3 categories for vacations.
  1. Cheap (something we could actually afford… less than $200 total)
  2. expensive (anything involving accomodations and travel expenses like flights or gas)
  3. out of my league (trips overseas etc)
But it has been nice to read about everyone’s trips so far. I am a bit sad that we don’t see any kind of vacation in our future but for now I guess I will just have to live vicariously through all of you!

We used to go on one family vacation every year. Then the kids got older and didn’t want to vacation with us. But lately we insisted as a family thing we go some place not necessarily a big trip.

Next up is NYC for a long weekend.

It’s good to have the family together even if we do sometimes get on each other nerves. Once a year should be the very minimum. We also have family get togethers, just dinner or a BBQ but you need the one family trip, at least for a couple of days.

Best family trip, Italy through Venice and Milan…also Disney when the kids were young.

Worst trip, borrowed my brothers van and went to Montreal where it promptly got stolen !!! :bigyikes: … recovered it about 4 or 5 months later…
