Does your parish have both modern and traditional Mass?

I do enjoy vernacular liturgy, but I feel like we have to be careful not to make people feel as if a Mass is less valid if it is tradtional, and especially in Latin. Sometimes I feel like the terms* Latin* or pre-Vatican II are tossed around like an insult/swear among many progressives.

I realize you’re being a little bit tongue and cheek, but my experience has been that it is generally the traditional folks who imply that a modern Mass is somehow less valid. I find most progressives will not argue about the validity of a Latin Mass.

NOT NECESSARILY ON THIS FORUM, but others (progressives) that I"ve talked to about this ridicule me for prefering the Latin Mass. I get remarks like “well, the Church banned that”, “the new mass is what we are SUPPOSED to be doing”, “the latin mass is just a fad some people are going through”, also that I should “get with the times”… funny these are kinda the same remarks these same progressives say about confessions as well.

Oh… and also I get “why? do you speak latin?” to which I reply “yes, I do! at mass”… they in turn reply “yeah, but you don’t speak latin fluently…”

As for my parish, there are 4 masses… 1 sat evening, and 3 on Sunday. All are mostly trendy. Latin hymns sung ONLY during Lent. NO gregorian chant. But, this is not where I usually go to Mass. I usually make the 50 mile drive to the Latin Mass.

I have yet to see anyone, outside of Sedevanctists, who claim that the OF Mass is invalid. The SSPX, for example, do not deny it’s validity.

I have heard some ‘conservatives’ who say that the vernacular Mass is a less that optimal Mass experience, which is hardly different from what I hear from ‘progressives’ about the Latin Mass.

Exactly. Outside of the radical traditional types, you’re right, no one really denies the OF’s validity. I have yet to meet someone who believes that.

However, at least the people who prefer to have the Mass in latin have SC on their side. I don’t see any VII documents holding up the vernacular Mass as the ideal…
