I’m usually busy in the “news” forum, but I suppose this question could be put here. I believe animals are our brothers in the St. Francis of Assisi sense of the meaning, and it’s important to do right by them.
I have a friend whom I visited today at a farm not far from me. When days were warm enough we’d take the English Setters that are kenneled our for long walks, they love it.
I have taken a long time shine to a female, Tri-color, 7 years old and the owner knowing this, offered her to me.
This is a dog that has lived outside her entire life (Please no discussion on whether dogs can or cannot live outside) so the question I have in my mind is the transition of a hunting dog moving into a home. I have owned a beagle and a border collie in the past and they were both indoor dogs.
I’ve done research on the breed, she is more on the submissive side, loves to cuddle and nuzzle, and pulls hard to come to me when out of her kennel and before getting back into it. It was a heart connection, one that has lasted over two years now.
I want her, but other than the endless stories on the www of whether moving a dog from the outside to the inside can be done fairly well without too much trauma, has anyone else ever done something like this? I would consider her in my mind a rescue even though she has been well fed, she’s starved for more human contact. Maybe that was why she wasn’t a star hunter…lol
Advice? Can’t stop thinking about her.

Are there more pros than cons to taking in the dog? Would the dog have a better life with you?

I say go for it as long as you can exercise her a reasonable amount. Will she have access to a yard?

Could you foster her for a short time and see how it works out?

I would like to think living with me would be far better than her kennel (a chuckle here), she would have access to a dog park to run free and wooded area for walks, and I don’t think the foster thing was an option. I think that answers all three of your questions and I have to admit, I am reading they require a lot of exercise. I appreciate the (name removed by moderator)ut. If I commit, it will be for life, no going back. I just don’t know how she will react to the “indoor” thing, I wouldn’t want her to be unhappy.

It sounds like you would offer a nice life to the dog. Follow your instincts. Pray for a sign.
