Don’t know if this is the proper forum but have three dogs 2 mixed breed one 10 and one 3 yrs old and a pure bred Chi-tzu(?) 1 yr. Oldest dog vet thinks is cross between Lab and Bird dog, 2nd is Shnauzer and Lab. Oldest has had two operations Jan 11 and Dec 11 for urinary bladder stones- expensive 2300 total for both surgeries- now on special diet which he hates but the other two love-hard to feed 3 dogs different diets-
live in the “Stone Belt” for humans as am in the medical field and the Urologists say there is a geographic “band” that crosses GA that includes us where the incidence of kidney stones is much higher than the rest of the US. Younger Vet who took care of us this last time- he’s new to the practice- told me (I’m a General Surgeon) that in south GA he saw 2 or 3 dogs a year with the problem, in Augusta he said its around 3 a month. Anyone with any (name removed by moderator)ut would help- still don’t have the stone analysis back from U of Michigan- can’t keep trying to keep the food apart- the little guy then gets almost none. Any (name removed by moderator)ut would be of great help.

Our dog is a pug and he had really bad stones. They ended up doing a procedure that rerouted his urethra so he has a special (ahem) opening for urine to come out. That has pretty much solved the problem of the stones backing up, though we still feed him the special food so he doesn’t have as many in the first place. Poor puppy!

As far as the food goes, we have four dogs and we only feed them a small amount, twice a day. At first, the dog with the stones didn’t like his food and would take forever to eat it and the other dogs would get at it. For the time being, we put him in another room to eat, until he’d finished. Now, he’s figured out that’s all he’s getting so he might as well enjoy!

Feed all of them only raw meat, bones and organ. It’s what God designed them to eat (they are essentially wolves in nicer clothing), it may seem expensive until you consider that they stay healthy so don’t need expensive vet treatments, Also if you hunt or anyone you know hunts, that can provide their food. it satisfies them more than kibble. I have a lot of other stuff to say but send me a PM if you are interested. There are tons of people doing this and their dogs are healthy and happy and vet free. Show me a wolf that grazes in a corn or wheat field!!

I worked for a vet for 3 years and we saw this problem ALL the time (in south eastern Ohio). In dogs and cats and it’s particularly bad for male dogs because of the way their urethra is shaped (male goats were the worst). The diet you’re on (I assume it’s royale canine SO diet) is just something the your dog is going to have to be on. It works long-term and is not a quick fix. And, sadly, a lot of dogs don’t like it too much. The last royale canine rep that came to see us promised they were working on making the food taste better but, 🤷

I feel for you though. This is a dangerous, frustrating problem that can reoccur without much warning. I hope everything gets better for you guys!
What are the stones made up of?
There are several different types of stones that can development in the bladder. The most common are struvites and I believe it has something to do with the PH level in their urine, it’s been too long I can’t quite remember.

Double check with your vet, but if you are feeding royal canin’s so I believe you can feed that to everyone in the house. Plenty of clean, fresh water should be offered at all times, and run a urinalysis every three months.

Good luck!

Your question was about food. I separate one of our dogs, but I do put them in an order every time. One goes outside as he doesn’t give any warning when he has to go. the next gets the same food and then my special needs dog who gets the bladder stones gets his. I try to supervise until they get started. Then generally they leave each other alone.

You may have to put them in different rooms or feed them in their kennels. I don’t want my other dogs getting different kinds of bladderstones because they eat the one dog food.

If your dog doesn’t like the food, well, nothing like hunger to cure that. Sounds mean but if they have to eat it they have to. They have moist food too.

you may want to entertain the raw diet mentioned earlier. I have heard that it fixes a lot. It probably isn’t any more expensive than the prescription food. Ask the vet too, but you may have to make up your own mind on this one. It’s kind of like the controversy between chiropractors and regualar MDs for back pain. Chiros go to just as much training, and their philosophy makes perfectly good sense, that if something is out of alignment and it encases our nerve central…it would affect something attached.

MDs just inject with cortisone and while that may help the swelling, and pain, it is still foreign and has other side effects. Still works but what if it is as simple as putting something back in place…?

Just thinking.
