So if I’m in mortal sin my obligation is to confess within the year?
Anyone in a state of mortal sin would be wise, of course, to seek Confession sooner than later but because it is an obligation to receive Communion once a year during the Easter period you must confess before receiving (if you are in a state of mortal sin).

This is where it doesn’t make sense. I understood that if we are in mortal sin we should go to confession as soon as possible but are you saying the church does not require this, just that we do so and gamble with our eternal souls and just do so before a expiration date of a year.

If it really was tied to the reception of the annual Eucharist it would be enough to say you must recieve once a year and you must be in a state of grace to do so. But the church specifically points out confession as a requirement…

The Church does not make it an obligation to go to Confession as soon as possible after committing a mortal sin, although as your immortal soul is in danger it is common sense to get there as soon as possible.

The once a year Confession applies ONLY if you are in a state of mortal sin. What don’t you get about that?

So how many of us can go a full year without committing a mortal sin? Heck, I’m lucky to make it a full month. It’s a good habit to go to confession often. I’m sure you have many venial sins that could be confessed. Your priest will advise you if you seem to be stuck finding mortal sins to confess. A really good examination of conscience is helpful.

Yes, I’m aware that venial sins do not need to be confessed but we all need to get to the confessional as soon as possible. Seriously examine yourself. Remember, we sin in thought, word and deed. We also sin by omission and assisting or causing others to sin.

God Bless
