Hello guys, this spring our pro-life group on campus is trying to expand our horizons beyond abortion and present on a wider variety of topics like crisis pregnancy centers, adoption, help for kids with disabilities, social services, etc. I needed to do a topic and lately I have been thinking about some article on CAF that I saw a while ago that talked about people requesting suicide in some country increasingly due to treatable psychological illnesses and that many of them are attributed to loneliness. And that got me thinking, loneliness is treatable. I starting thinking about how people are their own little islands in society and do not have the safety net of family like people used to in ages past. I thought about how elders are often forgotten or feel like a burden. So, I decided to do my presentation on suicide, euthanasia, and how to be a friend to someone going through depression or some other life challenges. You know, how to build a culture in which people can see that life is worth living.

Okay always, I usually pick a topic I know nothing about and am at a loss for resources. I need to present a power point and I need resources with statistics and practical things one can do in their day to day lives to make people feel like they are worth it. Now, please do not put Lifesite. I would like some unbiased sources for statistics. I am asking here because I am new to the movement and am thinking that there would be some experts here.

Here is a site I like: www.medlineplus.gov. It’s the National Institute of Health website and has lots of good articles on medical issues, of which clinical depression is one.
Here is an article on depression. Some of the references cited might be helpful for you.

Okay, thank you for the replies and, in case anyone wants to post something, I already have stuff from Not Dead Yet (a disability activist group against physician assisted suicide), Physicians for Compassionate Care (doctors against physician assisted suicide), and some statistics from WHO. Please keep them coming.

For the final slides I want to put ways to help build a culture in which every life matters besides, of course, activism. I was thinking of putting stuff like volunteering at nursing homes, homeless shelters, hospitals etc. and also making sure those close to you feel like they matter, like spending time with elderly relatives or family and friends that live alone and may not have company often. It is especially sad that a lot of elderly people are ignored. I will also accept more ideas in this category.
