Hi Everyone, God bless your lifes. My wife and I have been married for 20 years. He had blessed us with 5 beautiful children. We do not want to have more children. I am in my late 50’s and my wife at her beginning 40’s. I am not in fond of having surgery for either one of us to avoid another pregnancy, but her obstetrician has suggested that my wife should go surgery to have an hysterectomy or a tubal ligation. I do not knwo what to think. Would you mind helping me to do the will of God? Thanks

A couple of things…

First, religion aside, a hysterectomy to avoid pregnancy? That seems like a very radical solution. I’m surprised that the OBGYN would not have suggested a vasectomy as a far, far preferable surgery in terms of complications, etc.

Second, religion aside as well, while oral birth control methods in those over 40 have a relatively high risk of serious side effects, I’m surprised that anyone would consider surgery over barrier methods.

Thirdly, and most importantly, if you are looking to do the will of God, you can’t put religion aside and really should consider the Catholic teaching on birth control. Namely, that Natural Family Planning is an acceptable and effective way of avoiding having more children while at the same time…and this is where doing God’s will comes in…being open to having another child.

I guess the question you should ask yourself is “If it’s God’s will for us to have another child, am I willing to go against his will and engage in permanent (as in surgical) or artificial birth control and not leave open the chance for that to happen?”
