Doing stuff on Sunday

Hm. Well. I was crocheting my Mom a scarf and I was wondering if I could have worked on it yesterday (Sunday). I mean, it’s recreation, but it’s also “working” on it, if you know what I mean. Does that break the commandment of keeping holy the Sabbath?
Also, what about practicing and instrument or working on a language that you’ve been learning (if nobody told you you had to practice them everyday)?
 
If you’ve fulfilled your Sunday obligation by attending Mass, IMO, carry on with your day to day “stuff”.

LOL! I hope my knitting isn’t considered “work” - I started a hat on the plane yesterday and almost finished it in the hotel last evening! I knew about this short trip, so went to Mass Saturday night. Enjoy yourself and post a pic of your Mom’s scarf for us to admire!👍
 
The intent of keeping the Sabbath holy is to honor God via the missal obligation (at least - spending more time in prayer, study or meditation is a good thing) and to take a day of rest. Crocheting isn’t work unless you’re selling it. If it is possible to put off work til Monday or do it on Saturday, with the intent of keeping Sunday as a day of rest, that honors God, but this isn’t always possible so at least make an effort.

If you normally work weekends and can schedule Sunday as a regular day off, that honors God. If you work in medicine or public safety, that may not be realistic so it’s not expected of you.

I know some who are very observant of keeping Sunday for a day of rest, and avoid even cooking on Sundays (either by preparing a meal ahead of time to be reheated, or going out to eat). That’s good but not necessary - but planning to make Sunday for friends and family rather than errands and yardwork is a good idea.
 
Personally, I make sure I don’t go to the mall or food shopping on Sunday. That can be easily done any other day of the week.

After Mass there can be some time to be with family or friends, working on crafts, volunteering at a nursing home, playing an instrument, listening to good CD’s, etc.
