As Mollie Hemingway pointed out at Get Religion, any pope discussing gay anything will make headlines. In this case, nothing Francis actually said about homosexuality was new. In fact, in these two quotes Francis is doing nothing more than pronouncing long-standing Catholic teaching on homosexuality, sin, and the mercy of God.

Let that sink in for a moment: A pope is teaching the Christian faith, and the press is accurately quoting him, in blazing headlines that everyone will read.

There is something about our new Holy Father which has quite large sections of the press mesmerized. He seems to disarm them and in doing so then shoots straight to the heart of the issues. As time goes on, he is revealing himself to be a masterful leader.

This is exactly what I said to family the other day! He never said anything “new” or out of context or converse to Church teaching. Follow up with Cardinal Dolan’s comments about it being a different “tone”, which is true. By his calm demeanor and willingness to answer any questions, they were happy to report what he said. I just have to wonder if they really HEARD what he said!?? 😉 This will get interesting!
 
Not even the Holy Father can overcome the Ginger effect. If a prominent Catholic were to say "I favor a strong and holy priesthood and do not want to see homosexual priests,"the press would hear, “I favor blah blah blah blah homosexual priests”.

Look at these (mis)reportings as a “teachable moment”, a chance to explain what the Church really teaches.
