There is a convenient SA store near me where I have been dropping off old clothes, housewares, etc. My daughter also buys clothes for her daughter there - so cheap.
I never give money to them; is it sinful to donate goods (no money) to the SA store?
No other facility for this stuff is anywhere near me. thanks.

No. I usually gave to Goodwill when given the option.

Goodwill is a for profit organization. They take your free donation then sell it.
As far as I know in my area the Salvation Army will take your donations then distribute them to families in need.
I personally support the St Vincent dePaul Society
In any case donating unwanted items to any organization that will put them to a better use is preferable to trashing them.

I am thinking you are asking because of their link to Planned Parenthood.

There are other articles but I read that one recently.

If there isn’t any other shop such as that near you I would not think it would be sinful. It is wrong to not share also.

I try to avoid them anymore but I live near multiple Goodwills. I also try to box and save things for the local Catholic churches garage sales and then donate them there.

I think that OP’s concern is that they are a recognized, Protestant demonination. While they do excellent work, I’ll donate to our Church first.

OP here. I just drop the stuff in a bin inside the store. It is convenient as I cannot throw housewares in the other bins in the parking lots that just take clothes and shoes. Since I pass it on my way to visit my daughter, it is just convenient to take them to that store.
There is a good will nearby but I don’t think they take housewares.

Being scrupulous, do you think I should clear this with my priest in Confession? He may ask me why I am concerned, I don’t really know - do they approve of abortion? This doesn’t make me stop receiving Communion. And like I said, my daughter gets tons of cheap clothes for my granddaughter there, so I feel like I am giving back to them.

Is Good Will a more acceptable option??

thanks for your patience and understanding.

I choose to donate to the Catholic church first also. I do like that they give to the poor but have recently been concerned with their affiliation with Planned Parenthood.

All of the Goodwills near me take housewares. That is probably what I drop off more. Things tend to gather.

SA approves of abortion in certain situations but mostly do not. They have just come under scrutiny lately because of this.

It wouldn’t make you stop receiving communion since you didn’t know. Plus there are many businesses that are linked to Planned Parenthood, so many we probably don’t know. Here is a short list

facebook.com/notes/the-drew-mariani-show/list-of-charities-and-organizations-that-are-linked-to-planned-parenthood-andor-/223486397683559

You could talk to your priest, though, and he could advise you better.

Maybe I misunderstood but I was thinking the OP had asked because of Salvation Army’s stand on abortion, link to and sharing offices with Planned Parenthood. If all they were doing was giving to the poor I wouldn’t have a problem either, except that there are numerous Catholic charities in need of donations.

Wow,I wasn’t aware that they support abortion or PP,I will research and if in fact that is the case,I will only donate to CC as well!

Whether you are wary because of their specific Protestant beliefs or because of their advocacy of Planned Parenthood, I think your action is too far removed from any sin on their part. That is, you are helping people in need and that is the important thing.

It’s better to seek out a Catholic alternative and being at peace. It’s like with panhandlers…instead of money that they might use for alcohol or drugs I will buy them food.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with donating items to the Salvation Army. I take things to their truck because it’s the most convenient place to go - already in the parking lot where the grocery store is. I don’t feel like I have to seek out St. Vincent de Paul locations which are out of the way for me to get to.

From my own experience, it was suggested to me by a Catholic priest that donations to either the Salvation Army or the St. Vincent de Paul Society were encouraged.

God Bless and Peace to all.
