I stumbled over this article and read the comments on the article and it got me thinking of the current state of marriage. Divorce rates are more than 40% and the idea of it being “ownership”, signing a contract and being “bogged” down doesn’t help the institution that is seen as ancient. I thought the piece and comments given were depressing. 🤷

I do think marriage shouldn’t be taken lightly, both the thought and the action, and a lot people do participate for various reasons (child out of wedlock, financial situations etc.) while some rush into it due to the honeymoon phase. But then again, the website attracts those who are liberal and in general liberals don’t view the institution of marriage as more than a means to an ends. Certainly marriage isn’t for everyone and marriage isn’t necessary for a long term, healthy relationship.

What do you people think? Do you think future generations will look at marriage as a joke (my generation does) and just denounce it, only to participate if a child comes into the picture, while choosing cohabitation?

It’s commentary by a celebrity given in a beauty magazine. I don’t mean to sound harsh, but why should I care what she thinks about marriage?

I meant my post to not focus on her, but on her statement and the decline of the image of marriages in general.

Perhaps you haven’t gotten many responses because it is rather ambiguous what someone should be responding to, the article or the assertions you have made? Are your assertions based on the article or are they your actual opinions?
A couple of comments:
-“Honeymoon phase” by definition of the very words, comes after the wedding.
-“Your generation” does not seem to see marriage as a “joke” as you said. Often they are afraid of it because they are the children of the divorced generation. Permanence is alien to them but I bet many of them would like nothing more than the permanent, Sacramental commitment a true marriage offers if they knew more about it and prayed for the virtue of hope in regards to it.
Well, it isn’t necessary for my healthy, long-term relationship with my mom, my best girlfriends or my brother. But if you are talking about a romantic relationship, the last time I checked, fornication is a grave sin. If one knows that they are definitely not called to marriage or are unwilling to enter into a marriage, it is wrong for them to have romantic relationships period. Courtship is meant to discern marriage and anything else is lying to yourself or others.

I think most of the New Testament pretty much beats you over the head through repetition about how “the world” is going to reject God and you’ll be in the minority. This concerns everything from protecting the innocent all the way to things like marriage. So it is no surprise that our culture has disdain for marriage.

It’s sad because the US used to be infused with Christian philosophy and theology even in our public schools. That’s all gone now though and we’re living with the fruits of the progressive movement.
