don't think my parish priest wants to bless my new dog

My Pastor does not like dogs and makes no bones about it. He is not an animal lover. He does not bless them at the annual Pet Blessing, but he does permit the Blessing and the other priests do it.

Not everyone likes animals, and that is ok as long as one recognizes they are God’s creatures and does not abuse them or do harm to them.
 
I’m happy your situation got resolved well, and I will say a prayer to St. Francis of Assisi for your dog.

I thought of this late last night: Whenever I’ve had a specific but non-emergency pastoral need, what I’ve done is e-mail our pastor as opposed to just calling the parish office. He reads his e-mails at least a couple of times a week, and generally responds within a week or two. I’m talking about stuff like having a few gift rosaries blessed, that sort of thing. It just seems to go more efficiently.

In any case, I pray that your little dog will thrive in your care, and that the two of you will share a very happy life together for the greater glory of God. And don’t forget to look around for an animal blessing next fall for the feast of St. Francis of Assisi! Those are very edifying, and it’s a lot of fun to see the variety of pets and others that our parish family brings. Last year, the sheriff’s department even brought their K-9 dogs for a blessing, and after the blessing, did a demonstration. We’ve also had smaller livestock (a pony, and a llama,) and one year someone rode to the church on their horse! It’s well worth attending, and your dog will love it!

I was upset when I posted this particular time and could now kick myself. I’m sorry for my post and I agree with your post – in fact, it’s one of the reasons I like to post here – I get honest and sane replies from good, fellow Catholics and it helps me see things in the proper perspective.

I ended up talking with my therapist about this and felt like a fool and the humility was very helpful for me.

And no, I’m not changing parishes. Can do more good by staying put.

And by the way, my new dog is getting blessed this week. We have an appointment.

I am on staff at a large parish and had an experience along these lines - but bizarre. I work in the parish life center and generally find strangers looking for a priest. An older couple came in and the woman was carrying a bundle that looked like a baby. My first instinct was that these were grandparents that wanted to have a grandchild secretly baptized. As they got closer I could see they were distraught and then saw the face of a dog. Their dead dog. They wanted last rites for their dog that just died. I did not have the heart to tell them it was out of the question so I found a priest. The priest later told me he quietly said a simple prayer over the dog and then sent them on their way.

It’s a clever pun on the word ‘barque’ meaning ship. The phrase ‘Barque of Peter’ used to be a poetic way of referring to the church i.e. we are safe in Peter’s boat, we’ll be carried safely to the other side through the rough waves.

“bark” is an acceptable variant of “barque”.
